Something Silly for Saddamday Night While researching my "I'm Surprised It WASN'T Deleted" Saddam Saturday post, I had to slog through some pretty awful Saddam "humor", but there was one thing that made me chuckle...[More:]
After the deaths of Saddam's sons, Uday and Qusay, there was this list of "Other Hussein Family Members". I edited it to make it less tacky and more funny, but I still wouldn't put it on my own blog, so I offer it to you bunnies:
Hussein family members still at large include:

Sawtay, Sooflay, Puray and Bufay ... the restauranteurs
also Lattay ... who has a Starbucks franchise
Sayhay ... the baseball player
Shugaray ... the boxer
Gulay ... the Vegas entertainer
Biliray ... the country singer
Ecsray .... the radiologist
Sashay ... the male model
Phayray ... the gorilla trainer
Sayfuay... the grocery clerk
Guhday ... the half-Australian half-brother
Rehgay ... the half-Jamaican half-brother
Ohlay ... the half-Mexican half-sister
Ebay ... the internet millionaire
Sicday ... the hypochondriac
Tupay ... who you NEVER say anything about his hair
and the one they never talk about: Segway.

Dude, nothing personal. I'm sorry, but the guy was killed. No matter what an asshole he was, he was killed. And that's not (for me) comedy material.

Carry on.

WILL THIS WENDELL?

I understand, muddie; in fact, this pseudo-comedic meme came out back when Uday and Qusay bit the dust and was probably even more tasteless then. But sometime recently, my "laugh to keep from crying" reflex overloaded and there seems to me to be nothing worth taking seriously anymore - there's only funny, 'punny' and failed funny.

And come on... Tupay Hussain... NEVER mention his hair... :)

As a side note, despite the more recent horrific associations with the name Uday, it is a somewhat common, and (in my opinion) beautiful name where I come from. It means 'rising', specifically, a rising astronomical body, and is most often used to characterize the loveliness of the rising sun.

Perhaps I'm being too sensitive here (especially since this comment brings my comments on Metachat to a grand total of 10, or something) but I find cheap shots at names from other cultures and countries just that ... a touch cheap. Kinda like the jokes involving Chinese names, you know?

On preview, wendell, having just spent the better part of the last two days catching up on the news of the world from the previous week, I understand your need for comedic relief, but I stand by my original thought -- I personally hope to look for it elsewhere, although I'm not sure where exactly. I'm actually counting on all the people here at Metachat to lift my spirits like you usually do. :)

Dittos mudpuppie. There's not much funny in this anymore. Perhaps some humourists can extract some of the blacker side from this, but I'd think it'd be difficult. No one seems to be making fun of the name of the name of the body guard killed in the attack on Hussein's sons, let alone the teenage boy that was killed.
gaaah. there are tons of links i could put up here, but i don't know if it'll really matter.

--on preview (last sentence excepted) Yeah, I understand... No personal attack intended in the previous paragraph. It'd be nice if someone could squeeze some black humour out of this, if only to laugh at the mess. Maybe that's the killing joke, huh?

"and failed funny." I don't find this in bad taste but I do just find it not funny.

This one kind of summed it up for me.

I accept all the above criticism and appreciate your civility in the way you gave it (very non-MetaFilter of you). Dumb puns and making fun of names from ALL cultures are two of my guiltiest pleasures.

In fact, in a recent comment thread here that was deleted - for the sins of the original poster - I ended up taking requests from MeChatters for goofball variations on their nicks. And frankly, I was surprised at the positive response. ('ThePinkSuperhero' said she actually liked 'TheLavendarMutant' and 'carmina' was thrilled with 'SUVyoursa' and 'carmini-me')

After growing up with the surname Wittler constantly warped into either "Witless", "Hitler" or "Shitler", I developed a thick skin about names... sometimes too thick... and this is definitely NOT the first time I've been called on it.

I'm sorry my silliness was offensive, especially on a 'culturally insulting' basis... I could do the same with some Bush relatives, like the cousin who's an army sniper, Am Bush, or the half-Australian half-brother Bush Walker, or the family midwife Bush! Bush! Bush! or the only orator in the family worse than George W., Beatarounda Bush.

I'm a bad boy.

I giggled.

Eide liked it? Now that just proves it was in bad taste...
