I know it is a bit early in the day, but I found these photographs yesterday that haunted me all night (I exaggerate). [More:]I searched for more images like those, but no others I found will capture your gaze like these will. One remarkable photographer that took those soul searing portraits.

I find myself guessing their names, trying to imagine what they were thinking at the moment their image was captured, what their personalities were like - some of them look awfully demented, what were they accused of doing to be there in the first place... I have favorites, and ones I find myself irrationally afraid of their ghost. Try it.
Those are really great.

One looked like he was crying. Haunting, indeed.

Beautiful.
This one is just downright frightening, like those fucked up polaroids in Ringu.

Ah! I love these. I saw these posted on MetaFilter a year or two back and fell in love with them. I believe the story is that they were found in a drawer somewhere and had been lost for a long time.
These images are based on a group of about two hundred 3x4" identification photographs made between 1914 and 1937 that I found in a drawer in the Arkansas penitentiary in the summer of 1975.

There were others like this. I need to search back.....

Aha! Here is is: A flickr user called Least Wanted, who has great collections of this sort of thing.

This one stayed with me; it looks just like a buddy of mine.

These sorts of finds are fascinating. I know what you mean, getoffmylawn, I wonder what they did to get arrested in the first place. Some pictures look almost like driver's license photos. One guy looks like Barney Fife!

Haunting indeed. Some of them look downright mean, but a few just look kind of lost and I imagine them thinking "how on earth did I end up in this mess?"
