Extreme Makeover: Home Edition - it's crawling with Hollywood a couple of blocks over from the Chewy Cave.
[More:]We walked over yesterday for the total hell of it, got there just in time to see filming begin and the arrival of a buncha demolition derby cars. LOUD ones. We stayed long enough to watch them drive one up a dirt ramp and through the front door to kick off the 8 day project. All i had was my crappy phone camera, I'll see if I can dig up more from someplace...
Oi, is that the most annoying show in the universe? I can't stand it, the way the presenter just screams all the time, and the repeat every factoid sevenhundredbilliontimes before and after every (non-exitant around here) commercial break. And the constant chopping "when we return - drama drama drama" which inevitably will be repeated again when they have 'returned' (sans commercial break for me) so I get to see the same shots over and over and over again.

If you edit the crap out that show is only five minutes long. And the houses could be blown away by the big bad wolf with a minimum of huffing and puffing.

also, I bet you a good bottle of absinth that you don't dare to streak dressed only in a strategically placed toy-bus in front of the camera screaming "Move that bus!".

well I gotta say the show may suck, but it is damn amazing what they are doing in 7 days. Yesterday at about 10:30AM the first car drove into the house. The rest of the house was down by 1:30PM. Last night they poured a slab (had to be quick cure). Today we went over at about noon, and they were framing the second floor. Here are my favorite pics so far:

The dude going through the front door (it had been pre cut w/ chainsaws in strategic places. They also had to bash part of the brick on each pilaster so the car could get through.)

Other demo cars yanked the columns down:

more pics from demolition day here, and today's construction here.

It might not be an exquisitely crafted home, but the one they tore down had no insulation and was infested with bugs. It is damn amazing what a couple hundred very organized construction people can do in 24 hours. They really had their safety shit together too - ambulances and fire trucks were standing by during demolition, body boards ready to go, fire extinguishers, etc.

There are probably over 1000 people involved in the thing, including the volunteers. They also used local businesses to provide materials and machinery.

Oh, and they are also renovating the commercial building across the street where this woman works - the roof leaks, there is no handicap access (she is disabled also) and they're doing some other stuff too. I just can't imagine a project like this, which is really 2 projects, in 1 week, AND having to slow down for filming. Wow.

Oh, and here are today's pics.

There were some astoundingly stupid people in the spectator crowd. mrs chewy said one idiot woman in front of her, upon seeing the demo car blast through the front door, "oh damn I didn't get a picture! I'll get one on the second take." !!!

I love the houses they give to these people, but they are so over-the-top they sometimes don't seem to fit the neighborhood anymore. I wonder how the owners can afford them once the camera crews go home.
