I've come to the conclusion that I don't like it either way. I simply don't like working, period.

I don't mind "management." I do mind "control freak micromanagement." Especially when it seems motivated by the control freak's own freak-out due to disorganization, rather than to anything I'm actually doing or not doing.

I usually chalk it up to someone with poor management skills who is looking to justify their salary. "I'm the boss! Time to get bossy!"

One of an ideal manager's key qualities is his ability to assess which employees need micromanagement. (Sadly, most managers I've known don't get this.) I know you're not talking about a manager here, but the simple fact is that some people need guidance and/or a whip being cracked in order to get the work done. I would think that most bunnies are independent thinkers and workers that resent having someone looking over their shoulders.

Like you, I much prefer being given a task and a deadline and the assumption that if I need help, I will ask for it. Otherwise, leave me alone and trust that I'll get it done. I will.

My boss gives me the deadlines and helps me out if I need it, but he leaves me alone other than that. It's the right way to do things.

They've been leaving me alone for awhile, and I haven't been doing much of anything. I wonder what's up. My theory is that as long as I'm doing some work, it's cheaper to keep me than to hire somebody new.

My manager can be very nit-picky over things that seem stupid to me, but he's under pressure from his manager, so the number-crunching obviously has a purpose, even though I can't always see it. Where the casework is concerned, he realises that we are the experts and doesn't (usually) interfere.

Rather that than a previous manager who interfered in casework he had no knowledge of or expertise in, but who didn't want to know if there was an actual management problem that he needed to address.

The funny thing is that mr. rossi's biggest complaint as a manager is how much handholding he has to do. Employees who just want to be told what to do and be left alone are his favorite.

The thing is, I know I'm in a vicious cycle with my own manager. The more she micromanages, the more I think I *have* to ask for her input on every single stage of my work, because she seems to expect it. When I stop doing that, she gets all "EEK! DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON! MUST SEND FIVE EMAILS EVERY HOUR!" about it.

I dunno. Sigh. I need to finish school.

Ultimately, no. The goal is to get my own practice.
