Thanks, Microsoft! [More:]So IE6 had stopped working on a relative's computer. On just his single profile, IE would ... never open a window. No error message. No presence in the Task Manager. Nothing. This isn't a problem that's remotely like anything in the Knowledge Base. I tried the usual ways to trick it without success. It did work in safe mode, but running it there didn't change anything in standard mode. I even tried registry hacks. The last thing was reinstalling IE6 ... which changed nothing.

Meanwhile, through all of this, it works just like normal in his kids' profiles. What he really needed was a new Windows profile, but he didn't want to go through all the loss of settings that would entail. He uses AOL and SBC (AT&T) Yahoo, both of which depend on IE to run, and weren't affected in the least. It was just IE that couldn't open its own windows.

There it stood. Until the release of ... IE7. We figured it was a "worth trying" thing. Worst comes to worst ... he still doesn't have a browser he doesn't use, right?

Well. For his profile, where IE6 wouldn't open, the window comes up and says "Connecting", but it hits the ceiling on the taskbar with 99% of cycles. In his kids' profiles, it says the same thing, but you can close the window manually.
Meh, I just installed an extension update for FF2 on the Mac and it arsed up the entire install. Had to delete the FF dir in the Library/Application Support dir, thus starting me from scratch again. Luckily it's not my main browser, but I did lose all my passwords, extensions and the like. I've got to start teaching AdBlock all over again. Not happy.

Have you run an "sfc /scannow" ?

dhartung, try a couple of things:

Open a command prompt and type "netsh winsock reset" and press enter. Restart the machine and see if that corrects the problem.
If that doesn't correct it, check for spyware. Go to www.ewido.net and download Ewido and run it.
If that doesn't work, use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (also called the User State Migration Tool, or USMT) on the bad profile to export his settings and files. The wizard has the capability to pack up the user profile as a set of files in a folder.
Set it to do this and save the folder somewhere like the root of the C drive (or an external drive if one is handy). Check over the list of settings it's going to include, and then put a check box in "Let me select a custom list..." so that you can pick Firefox or Thunderbird settings (if they're in use) or any other application-specific stuff.

Then create a new user, log in as the new user, and use the F&STW as the "new computer" to reimport the profile.
If all goes well, you'll get a new profile with some of the junk gone, but the important stuff still in place.

I've got to start teaching AdBlock all over again. Not happy.

once you've got it retrained, use notepad or other text editor to open the prefs.js file in your firefox profile dir. near the top you'll see a very long line like so:

user_pref("adblock.patterns", "http://ads.vnuemedia.com/* http://pagead*.googlesyndication.com/* etc etc etc");

just copy it to a new file and if firefox gets borked and you have to reinstall it in the future you can just reinstall adblock, copy that line into your new prefs.js and adblock will remember everything it used to block.

in fact its a good idea to just copy the entire prefs.js to another location because there's likely other stuff in there you may want to easily restore after a fresh firefox install.

Triode: I suspected all along it's probably a corrupted DLL, but yes, and that didn't find it.

disclaimer: It isn't a TCP/IP level problem. Ewido is new to me but probably something I would have heard of if I were still doing this professionally, though, so thanks! As for the migration it will probably end up something along those lines.
