Please help me with this stupid piece a shit Mac monitor. [More:]

It's too goddam bright! And there's no brightness control that I can find in the Preferences thingy. And what the hell is this button in the lower left-hand corner that lights up when I touch it but otherwise does nothing?
click anywhere on the desktop so that you're in the "finder," then F14 should pop up the brightness control. F14 for down F15 for up.

It doesn't do anything when I press either key! *wails*

What kind of piece of shit mac monitor? SOme of those shittier ones had the controls on the monitor itself.

Specklet, you'd make anyone brighten up, even a stupid piece a shit Mac monitor.

I bet you already tried to open the system preferences, selected displays in the in hardware section and lightened the brightness from there.

I bet you already tried F1 to darken and F2 to brighten.

Have you tried control-command-option-and the number 8 key all at the same time? That'll make it darker alright...the same commands switch it back.

okay, go to "finder" again. click the apple in the top left, then 'system preferences' click the "displays" option. the brightness control (it's a slider bar) should be underneath the resolution options.

I'm tryin' to tell yuh, there isn't any brightness controlling OPTION in the system preferences. We must have different monitors.

There are no controls on the monitor itself. There are two buttons. One is the power switch and the other lights up when I touch it, but does nothing else.

It's a relatively large flatscreen.

F1 and F2 do nothing, nor the 8-key.

I can calibrate the monitor, but there is no brightness control option anywhere in the calibration process.

I am very frustrated and my eyeballs hurt. I like agropyron.

This may be simplistic, but is there a brand name/model anywhere on the monitor (ought to be some specs on the back, no?) that would lend themselves to a vigorous Googling?

I'm sorry, I can be 'puter dense sometimes...

Are you looking in the finder prefs from the pull down menu or the sytem prefs that you opened from the icon that has an apple and a light switch on the dock?

Are you on a desktop or laptop? Which system are you running?

I don't know what you mean when you say a light switch on the dock, but I'm looking in the systems preferences. I didn't have any problem finding the preferences, the monitor calibration, the resolution option, all that stuff. It's just that there is no option ANYwhere to turn the GODDAM BRIGHTNESS DOWN.

I'm going to try a model number and googling.

And what the HELL is this little button that lights up and does nothing?

It's this one.

The little button that does nothing is supposed to bring up a little brightness dialog. Your mac is having trouble talking to your monitor.

Did you know that Macs communicate with monitors using USB? Try checking to see if the USB connection between your monitor and your Mac didn't fall out of the socket or something.

Maybe rebooting would help.

A brighness dialog? You mean like something that will allow me to actually control it? Awesome! Okay, now. If it only worked properly...

Thanks!!!

Just go with it, put on some sunglasses and pretend its sunshine, Sunshine!

Or get some of that electrostatic window tinting and put that over the monitor to "dim" it.

It won't do it. The button still doesn't work. Fuck!
