stupid damn moronic drug laws [More:]
So since I have enough drainage to drown a fish and since I can't get any Nyquil that actually does ANYTHING for my sinuses now, anyone have a suggestion for something else that won't keep me awake? I know two or three medicines at least that have removed pseudoephederine from their ingredients, but which ones still have it?

Had I known about this "new formula" of Nyquil, I would have bought a fucking shelf full of the other stuff even if I had to do it two bottles at a time.
Have you tried using a neti pot? You can probably get one at the drug store. It's like a little aladdin's lamp and you add a saline solution to it and pour it into your nostrils one at a time. If you pour it into your left nostril it comes out your right nostril. It's amazing stuff - you'll be unclogged and feeling better in no time. It cleans out your sinuses and lets everything drain.
Yeah, it's weird.

I was sick last week. That new NyQuil is worthless. The two things I needed it do do was work on the sore throat and the stuffy sinuses. Those are the two things they took out. The point of NyQuil is to take it and sleep off the cold. Didn't happen. I'm going to start smuggling the shit in from Canada.

Sudafed worked on my sinuses. Had to show ID while they typed in my whole history into the computer. But I'm cured now!

To make matters worse, you can only buy two bottles of DXM-containing cough syrup per month now, and you can only buy one at a time. I bought some Robitussin a couple weeks ago and the pharmacy actually swiped my driver's license.

Fucking big brother cough syrup nazis.

I had a nasty cold last week, and Sudafed kicking the crap out of it (for the first time since I was a kiddie).

Also, if you have a really clogged nose, Afrin will clear it up for a few hours (but it comes back with a vengeance, and you can only use it every 8 hours or so).

Oh, won't keep you awake. What about Claritin-D? That never kept me awake.

These laws are bullshit.

The methheads will find other sources of these chemicals. And people who are sick and in pain won't get the relief they need.

I continue to recommend the highly effective, medically endorsed, hair dryer cure for the common cold.

I bought some Claritin-D. Strangely it does keep me awake, I feel almost hyper after taking it. Thus I also bought some Advil PM to take instead of normal Advil. The nice lady at Walgreens told me that basically EVERY over-the-counter cold/flu medicine has taken out the pseudoephedrine and some of the other goodies too (she named off a couple of ingredients that I do not remember, apparently Nyquil took out two things). Meh. Nyquil was my friend. *hugs empty Nyquil bottle to chest, sobs*

Never heard of the hair dryer thing, but it's worth a try. I looked for one of those pots but Walgreens had none. That would actually probably help me a lot, I think most of my sinus problems are from my gardening. Breathing in a lot of mold, dust from wood and dirt and dead plant material, pollen, etc. I came inside tonight and the stuff I blew out of my nose was practically black. I have a habit of cupping my hands full of water and snorting it when I get a shower after I have been working outside and although it burns like fire I have noticed it helps, so I am sure the pot thing would be better.

And yeah, I had to have my driver's license looked over and typed into the computer to buy the Claratin. The meth labs can use other things and the more sophisticated ones already did, IIRC. And there are some other really common items used in meth production as well. Just wait, they will be banning something else really common before long. Denatured alcohol will require a federal permit like nitrogen does for farmers. Maybe iodine too. And duct tape. And coffee filters.

Claritin. I always want to insert an a.

How long before you have to buy meth to back out the NyQuil?
posted by Divine_Wino 11 October | 22:20
it's all a byproduct of making less offensive drugs (than meth) more expensive and harder to get... people want to get high, weither that smoking pot or mething out. I've heard recently that in response to drug store crackdowns meth is starting to come in from mexico. good christ, if you are going to import illegial drugs make it something actually decent.
Anybody heard of Cat? Some concontion like meth, didn't seem to last long but was around about 7-9 years ago, guess it was too nasty even for tweakers.

Kat or Khat or cat? It's an African leaf (plant anyway) you chew and it's much more mild than meth, more like coffee or chewing Coca leaves. (...Unless of course there is some other cat that I don't know about.)

Khat is the common currency for paying militia in Somalia, and is one reason that Mogadishu, in particular, has become the meritocracy we all so admire.
posted by paulsc 11 October | 22:38
IIRC, Khat doesn't travel very well. It's only grown in Africa (or the Middle East?) so it's kind of not really worth the expense and hassle.

Scotch is good, hadn't heard of the hairdryer way before, and what about plain old Vicks? You can rub it on your chest and/or put it in hot water and stick your head over it. Not sure if it's what you need, though...
If it turns into a cough, then Nin Jiom is the cat's pajamas. Elizard turned me on to it, and it works like all-get-out. [long explanatory link, short explanatory link. official website is slooow]

Oooo, I'm making note of the hairdryer approach for the next one!

God, I love this place. All these great ideas (the hair dryer one kicks butt, I can't wait to try it-is that strange?). Everyone here really rules.

*sorry, I'm in a snuggly, loving mood and I want to share*
*hugs all around, and hoping everyone is healthy!*
