07 October 2006

I spent the day at the Mall. Photos from my hike up and down the Washington Mall today. Unfortunately it was dark and overcast all day, but some of them still came out okay. [More:] I wish I had Photoshop on my laptop to boost the color and contrast on some of these, but oh well.

Some other pics from the stay in DC thus far:

Union Station (my home base)

Chinatown

random urban shots
MGL, I was thinking of you when I took this one.

How is Washington shaping up against your expectations? What have you liked best, so far? What haven't you liked?

I actually feel much more at home here than I thought I would. People are a lot friendlier than I'd imagined they would be. Seeing the monuments today, esp. the Lincoln memorial and the Vietnam wall, was way more emotional for me than I'd thought it would be. Also, I could eat in Chinatown 7 days a week... I love Chinese food, and everything I've had there so far has been DELICIOUS.

My only real dislike has been the fact that it's a really LOUD city... every time I walk anywhere, there are sirens screaming and firetrucks or ambulances racing by almost constantly. My whole walk on the mall today was permeated with sirens racing up and down both Independence and Constitution streets, and both of my meals in Chinatown have been to the sound of sirens screeching outside. My hotel isn't far from a firehouse, so I hear sirens at all hours of the night, too. I don't know if it's a fluke or what, but I NEVER hear this many sirens at home in Atlanta.

I know this is stupidly last minute, but was a meetup ever planned for your trip to DC? If you're looking for something to do tonight, I'll be out drinking and would love to buy a fellow bunny a drink! Just shoot me a text or call. (four one oh eight oh oh eight three three two.)

Great pictures. I visited the memorial quite a long time ago (pre-husbands). My then partner was a veteran of the Vietnam War (my much-older-man period) I remember the silence. Everyone got so quiet as you descended past the walls. It was an incredible experience. I also got a rubbing of the soldier whose bracelet I have, one of those MIA stainless bracelets. Very emotional. I think everyone should visit at least once.

Looks like you had a good time sightseeing.

I'd love to see the Vietnam Memorial. George had this print framed on his wall (he was a Vietnam vet). Although it's from that sentimental genre of art I generally detest, I always found it a very moving picture.

redvixen, the silence at the Vietnam wall was amazing. Everywhere else people were loud and chatty, but as they walked along that wall people were speaking in a low church-whisper, if at all.

essexjan, it was a great day despite the rotten weather (of course TODAY, as I walked in to work, it's absolutely gorgeous out!). That print that George had is very moving... you're right that it overcomes its genre.

Wow! A great set of photos, BP. I'd like to do that someday. Did you not visit the Jefferson Memorial? Isn't it right there or am I directionally challenged (I've never been to DC)?
