05 October 2006

It's raining. This is a very big deal, because[More:] it hasn't rained here since April.

Crosbie the dog wasn't keen on going for a walk, but once I coaxed him outside his nose lit up, metaphorically speaking, and he started wriggling and digging and snuffling around. All the scents in the air are back: cedar, rosemary, eucalyptus, various artemisias, and a faint tang of citrus. Also woodsmoke.

I'm listening to the sounds: raindrops landing on grass, leaves, pavement, tarps; drips falling from metal awnings and gutters.

I appreciate sunshine as much as anyone, but after months of it on end, unbroken, this is just lovely.
No rain for five months? Oh, dear. Where do you live tangerine? (also, yay! rain!)

I'm in Darwin and we're still waiting. Since April. And now the weatherman is saying we can't expect any real rain until after Christmas.

Then, of course the monsoon comes. I love rain.

The smell of rain is why I love living in Oregon.

It actually struck me that it was a weird time of year for rain -- shouldn't it not come till November or December? -- but I'm still not used to this whole "rainy season" thing. It's like living in a big city that's on an agricultural calendar; it can be jarring.

Well, actually, it's exactly like that, I guess. I kept picturing Sonoma and hoping the crops were doing well as I trudged down city streets, getting drenched as I worked my way to the bus stop.

I think the first rain last year was in the first or second week of October, but I haven't been here long enough to have a sense of what's "normal" yet.

Everyone in my neighborhood has elaborate sprinkler/soaker systems, so maintained property is uniformly green -- the difference shows up in neglected strips of land. This morning near construction sites and the edges of parking lots there were tiny tips sprouting everywhere.

I just talked to a friend of mine who's currently in the Midwest, and he said the rain in the Bay Area has made the news there (!) because it's so unusual. And he confirmed that rainy season doesn't normally start till December.

So it's confirmed: It's apparently a slow news day in Wisconsin.

cmonkey - it's nice up here, too. Going for a walk amongst cedar trees after a rain is wonderful.
