This was a comment. Now it's a post. [More:]I just worked on a Pretty Things compilation and had to manually add half the members to our database myself. What kind of 'comprehensive media database,' is missing half the personell of the most import British R&B act after the Rolling Stones? (why do I even bother?)

Other times I've discovered that Signe Anderson (original vocalist for the Jefferson Airplane)was not in the database either. The company's rationale for this is that we need to concentrate of big ticket new releases. As if someone buying a Britney Spears record cares who played drums on it, or would have difficulty locating the disc.

Also, I am working an a new artist who says that one musician plays the 'Melatron.'

Mellotron, dumbass. Or are they trying to be cute and psuedo artless?

/rant
Just for your records, I introduced Nation of Ulysses when they played Sarah Lawrence with Kicking Giant and Bikini Kill. I can't remember the date, but, you know, for the db.

omie, I wish this was a database of my own. believe me, my iTunes playlist is much better done.

A few months ago the new department head who's name ends in "uck" (so that I've taken to calling him [blank]uck the mucketymuck" sent out a questionairre. One question was "what do you like best about your job?" I said "Seeing how much good music exists." Then it asked "What do you like least about your job?" "Seeing how much bad music exists."

Are we complaining about work in this thread? Because if we are, I'd like to state that it should not take 10 e-mails for me to be able to suss out exactly what kind of article you want me to write. In addition, you should not wait until the 10th message to tell me that I'm actually being hired as a ghostwriter and that the article will bear the name of some random CIO.

More info for when you cross-ref omiewise and Kicking Giant in the db: A friend of a friend's former co-worker put out the first Kicking Giant CD, before they were on K records. His name is Michael. He also knows the bassplayer for the Medications.

Is Maryann Price in your database? Can you identify two bands she has played in?

Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, and then a brief stint with the Kinks.

Pretty eclectic range.

Shoulda know that one. Dang.

One of my dipshit claims to fame is that I played in a pickup band with this guy named Pat Nolan. Just a bunch of people who were helping me work on some of my songs, and Pat was an old school mate of mine from elementary school.

He went on to play bass for Cher, with her short-lived band Black Rose. . .even got a pic in Rolling Stone. But damned if I can find any evidence on the net supporting that memory.

My dad used to go postal when the Pretty Things came on TV. The lead singer's hair was much longer than anyone else's at the time. I just looked at some photos on the net, and it isn't that bad at all. Plus he's hot as hell.

Well, hence the name* (I've sported hair longer than that most of my post-adolescent life). But in contrast, their music was hard as nails. And their guitarist, Dick Taylor, was the bass player in the Stones pre-Bill Wyman.

*..and inspiration for Bowie's masterwork "Oh, You Pretty Things!" maybe?

Now, I'm working on a CD of movie music. (Working from the actual CD covers, mind you). One track on this (all spelling is theirs) is "Theme from Shakespear In Love," and my personal favorite " Love Them From Chinatown."

This is stuff that was sent to a printer and is going out for release. God help us all.

Haha! "Love Them From Chinatown" - perfect!

my iTunes playlist

OK, Jon, that should be published.

is there a 'generate HTML playlist function' in iTunes somewhere? I'd be happy to.

I have no idea, being the mp3/iPod Luddite that I am. I set up my son's iTunes account and showed him how to do all the basics with his iPod. Now he shows me. However, after seeing what my brother has done with a nearly full 30Gig iPod, I think I may need to make this leap.

My son says file/export playlist/xml. Who knows? He's an iTunes guru, yet an html tyro.

Well, if you do get around to it, I would appreciate if you shoot me an email. You have got good musical taste, at least to my ears.

I tried it. It came out like an RSS feed. there's gotta be another way.
