I knew my trip was cursed. →[More:]
I was outside a punk show in Vilnius last night when some Nazis came out of nowhere, peppersprayed me, and beat me on the head after I fell to the ground. It was about as enjoyable as you can imagine, and now my head is fucking killing me.

Oh man, that's awful. Was there any reason they targeted you, or was it just random violence? Did you contact the authorities or the US embassy?

It was sorta targeted: I was outside an anti-fascist punk show, and there's nothing Nazis hate more than anti-fascist punks. I didn't see who did it, so going to the cops wouldn't help anything.

I slept a bit last night, but it was on a couch in a friend's unheated flat, so it wasn't for very long. I'm trying to find out what my medical options are now; my head hurts more every hour.

Thanks, everyone. I went to a clinic, and the doctor doesn't think that I have internal bleeding, but she does think that my jaw might be fractured. Unfortunately, I can't get an MRI or x-ray until tomorrow morning. In the meantime I have painkillers and Xanax and a promise from a doctor that I won't die in my sleep. This was really not the kind of adventure I was hoping for, that's for sure.

Man, this sucks big time.

The punks around here used to be at war with skins; they couldn't stand the sight of each other. It's probably the same in Lithuania (it's the same damn region). I assume that they chose you as their target because you were alone.

Skinheads used to be a nuisance around here, but the situation's gotten a lot better as the police have been very effective in dealing with them. I do think that it would be better to turn to the police: it might not make any difference to you, but it might make them get off their asses and do something about it if they find out that a foreigner was attacked.

It's true that the Nazis are always fighting the punks, but the people I talked to afterwards said that this is the first time they did something like this here. Fucking bastards.

Anyway, with the help of a very kind medical student, I navigated the local hospital maze and got a CAT scan. I'll find out the results tomorrow, but I'm feeling much better now, and I don't think it'll show any serious damage. Walking is more painful than it was yesterday, and my arms have some really horrible cuts, but I think I'll be OK.

Well, I only got one painkiller dose, so I'm in no danger of being strung out for the rest of my trip :-)

I saw a lot of signs advertising "masaže" (the ž is pronounced like the su in pleasure) in Warsaw, but I'm not sure if those are legit places or not. Haven't seen so many in Lithuania, but I'll ask the doctor when I see her today. I think I have enough money for it.

But for now, I have a museum to go to.
