Mike Thomas is the Detroit morgue's official body collector. He receives $14 for every person adn $9 for every animal he delivers.

According to state statistics, the vast majority of homicides occur in the predominately black city, and the preponderance of suicides occur in the mostly white suburbs.

"My theory?" Mr. Thomas offered. "White people kill themselves. Black people kill each other. Chinese people don’t die."

Wow, that's depressing. $14 for collecting a body?

What would you do for $14? How much would you want to collect a dead body and deliver it to the morgue?

(OK. I didn't read the article at first. But now I have.)

The dude sounds like quite a character. Of course, you'd probably have to be quite a character to do a job of that nature.

The article refers to pay of $14,000 a year, which translates into at least 1,000 dead bodies (probably more, considering the lower pay for animals) the guy had to touch and pick up and throw in his van and . . .

Damn. There are definitely worse things than temping.

We got more dead animals than dead humans lying around in Detroit, but, yeah, I think the guy is underpaid.

What I found interesting (besides it being an article about Detroit in the Times) was that he's an ex-con who is making a living and surviving.
