What's in your shuffle? [More:]I don't recall seeing a look at the randomness of shuffle in a while, so here are the first ten that come up in mine:

Menthol "Future Shock"
The Replacements "Within Your Reach"
The Police "Be My Girl - Sally"
Linus of Hollywood "Building A Ship"
XTC "Funk Pop A Roll"
The Replacements "Another Girl, Another Planet"
The Psychedelic Furs "Valentine"
The Doors "Light My Fire"
Negativland "Christianity Is Stupid"
Neil Young "Ohio"

This looks very late 80's college rock to me. I'll never complain about 2 Repleacemnts songs, but I didn't even know I had "Light My Fire" loaded.

Not embarassing at all. How did you fare?
OK, here goes:

Dictators - The Next Big Thing
Evie Sands - Take Me For A Little While
Noble 'Thin Man' Watts - Shakin'
Equals - Honey Bee
Mudlarks - Lollipop
Ronettes - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
Sly & The Family Stone - I Want To Take You Higher
Ames Brothers - Candy Bar Boogie
Rev. Horton Heat - Psychobilly Freakout (live)
Four Tops - Got To get You Into My Life

(hmmm, not bad at all. I'm pretty fuckin' cool)

Negativland! Yay!

My first ten:

The Sex Pistols "New York"
Guided By Voices "Father Sgt. Christmas Card"
Depeche Mode "Just Can't Get Enough"
Lambchop "The Scary Caroler"
The Posies "Golden Blunders"
Nanase Aikawa "Seven Seas"
Ramones "Somebody Put Something In My Drink"
Wire "Marooned"
The Beatles "I Want To Tell You"
Robyn Hitchcock "Fifty-Two Stations"

I can't believe I went through ten songs without a Stereloab song popping up... I think they outnumber every other band in my MP3 player (except maybe Guided by Voices).

Dictators into Evie Sands is a little cool, but having the Equals in there is pretty damn fucking cool. Especially since it's not one of the hits. The Equals are sort of an obsession with me and I'm always glad to see another fan out there.

Pere Ubu - Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo,
Swell Maps - Another Song
Incognegro - Brand New Cadillac
Original Sinners - Who's Laughin' Now
Impact - The Man Goes On
The Pixies - Where Is My Mind?
Meaty Buys - Criminal Mind (Duddle)
Scream - Things to Do Today
Butthole Surfers - Butthole Surfer
Les Savy Fav - The Sweat Descends

That Impact tune sucks, other than that I wouldn't go crazy abandoned on a desert island with these.

*high-fives slack*

The Equals doth rock. 'I Get So Excited,' is possibly the best hormonal overload song ever. Grant sounds like he's gonna explode when that girl shows up.

Is that The Equals that did 'Baby Come Back' with a young Eddy Grant on guitar?

Blondie, One Way - Notably sung at a battle of the bands by an old flame of mine; a highly weird moment since we weren't entirely disentangled by that point
Season to Risk, Or Highwater - Awesome song by an underrated KC band
Jawbox, Green-line Delayed - Not one of my favorite Jbox albums
SV, Luka - My first exposure to Suze. It wasn't love at first sight.
Metallica, House that Jack Built - Or, as my friend's brother called them at this point, Alternica
APC, Sleeping Beauty - An ex insisted I get into APC. I already was, but that pretty effectively got me out of them.
Misfits, This Island Earth - After a decade of seeing Misfits stickers on lockers and patches on people's backpacks, I finally downloaded a bunch of their stuff one day in college (yes, all in one day). B-music based on B-movies, fun way to kill an afternoon.
Henry Rollins, Hey Henrietta - From a MeChatter.
Sifl n' Olly, Cindy's the Hostess - Sent to me by an lj friend; I never really got into S&O until all the episodes were uploaded to Youtube.
Faith No More, Digging the Grave

Not really indicative of my collection. Well, maybe more indicative than I like. Nothing I'd have in regular rotation made that list (except the S2R, who I can't stop listening to), though honorable mentions among the next five songs were OLP's classic Naveed and X-static off the original (and still best) FF album.

Shelby Lynne -- Go With It
Aimee Mann -- King of the Jailhouse (Gotta love a chorus that proclaims "Baby, there's something wrong with me" over and over.)
Dixie Chicks -- Cold Day in July
Joan Fucking Jett -- Five
New Pornos -- Star Bodies
Band of Horses -- Our Swords
Flogging Molly -- Another Bag of Bricks
Pretenders -- Night in My Veins
Crash Test Dummies -- The Psychic
Lucinda Williams -- The Night's Too Long

Metallica - Phantom Lord
Candy Machine - The Merchant's Square
Sonic Youth - Starfield Road
Shudder to Think - Baby Drop
Metallica - The Small Hours
Public Enemy - Incident at 66.6 FM
Basement Jaxx - Always be There
The Crownhate - Ruin Piss Alley
Beastie Boys - No Sleep Till Brooklyn
Led Zeppelin - Black Country Woman

kind of eclectic-ish. And not nearly enough pop music to really reflect me. It's my angry shuffle.
posted by gaspode 01 September | 12:22
New Order - Kiss of Death
The Smiths - Unlovable
Stromkern - Histories
Jorane - Film III
Skinny Puppy - Deep Down Trauma Hounds
The Wedding Present - Always the Quiet One
The Great Depression - Meet the Hapsburgs
My Favourite - Working Class Jacket
The Black Heart Procession - It's a Crime I Never Told you About The Diamonds in Your Eyes
Trust Obey - Sleeping Angel

Going through too quickly there.

It might be fun to take shuffle lists from a lot of people, anonymize them, and then play try to match the list with the user.
posted by cmonkey 01 September | 12:25
that would be fun, cmonkey. In previous threads I've had ppl tell me that they knew it was mine before they got to my username.

I told Winamp to play random songs from an entire HD. It took several minutes to populate the playlist. Then I just skipped through the first bunch of tracks to see what they are. I did more than ten though.

Aerosmith - The Other Side
Goblin - Sleepwalking
John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band - On The Dark Side
Radiohead - Airbag
The Feeling - Sewn
Soundgarden - Like Suicide
Kubb - I Don't Mind
311 - D'yer Mak'er (LZ cover)
Tonic - Liar
The Neverending White Lights - The Grace
Prince & NPG - Cream
Anthrax - Taking the Music Back
U2 - Desire
Zigo feat Joan Rochette - Sleigh Ride
Lene Lovich - Wonderful One
Blonde Redhead - Harmony
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - In this Home on Ice
Steve Wariner - Lynda
REM - Pilgrimage

Odd that there were two songs so similar in title the dark side/the other side out of tens of thousands of choices for winamp.

This is a pretty accurate sampling for me...Oddly, the only thing really missing is some old school punk, but then again, it's doesn't get much more old school punk than Johnny Cash.

The Jam / Billy Hunt (Demo)
Chet Baker / My Buddy
Dion / Lookin' for the Heart of Saturday Night (thanks jonmc!)
The Band / Don't Do It (studio version)
Cash, Johnny / San Quentin (live at San Quentin)
Neko Case / Buckets Of Rain (Bob Dylan)
Ray Charles / I Wonder Who
Graham Coxon / What's He Got?
Sarah Harmer and Jason Euringer / Songs for Clem - Summertime
Bob Dylan / Sara

P.S. Mudpuppie, I like your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter...where can I download your collection? Thanks!

Yup. That's the one. Other than "Baby Come Back" they seem to be best known for the original version of "Police On My Back", later covered by the Clash. They have a slew of great British R&B songs and a bunch of songs I can only describe at beat bublegum pop. They were the shit. I seldom go a week without playing at least one Equals song.

TPS, I love that Nickel Creek cover of Toxic. It's awesome live, too. (They're better live than recorded, I think. Go see them if you can.)

Richat, send $29.95 via paypal and expect first installment within 8-10 weeks.

Klark Kent - Away From Home
Skinny Puppy - Testure (S.F. Mix)
Smithereens - Behind the Wall of Sleep

Tricky - Wait for God
Manfredo Fest - Madrugada
Andrews Sisters - Well All Right
Mohammed El-Bakkar - Ah Ya Zain
Sly & Robbie - Sitting and Watching
Inolvidables Mexicanas - La Borrachita

This is why I never listen on shuffle. It just does not. make. sense.

Set Winamp to shuffle and this is what it came up with (the first 10 songs):

Nina Simone - Mississippi Goddam/Moon Over Alabama (cause everybody knows about Mississippi, goddam!!)
Microfilm - Inouwall (downloaded a whole album of theirs on a whim; haven't listened to it much, though)
Herbie Hancock - The Essence
Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man (had I been exposed to her music when I was 15, I would totally have been in love with her voice. But I was't. Yet, in a way, I still am)
Arkestra One - Train to Machu Pichu
Pia Fraus - Right Hand Traffic (My Bloody Valentine clone)
Crusho - Kool Bavaria [Patchworks remix]
Blur - End of a Century [live] (I really don't like them in live)
Kino - Aprel' (Russian rock from 1980's. I used to like their songs (sort of), until I grew a bit older and suddenly discovered that their lyrics are bland and stupid.)
Gruff Rhys - Gwn Mi Wn
