i saved a butterfly! It had been on the stairwell window for two days, but today it was fluttering stumblingly and desperately.→[More:]
I hadn't wanted to pick it up before because it would fight and its wings would be damaged, but today I was able to slip my finger under its legs and it held on calmly until I took it downstairs and released it out the door. It flew away pretty well so I hope it finds some nectar and a mate!

It was dark, dark brown on the outside and orange and several shades of brown when it opened its wings.

In Scotland it was probably a Red Admiral.

Well done you! I still hesitate about going anywhere near an insect, especially flying ones.

Yay! Good job! I'm fond of rescuing big moths myself. For some reason I find their big fuzzy bodies and huge eyes irresistably cute. I particularly like the ones that have antennae that look like sword ferns.
