I got Finder yesterday From Trisha Lynn, who happens to rule. And I read it in an hour or so and enjoyed it very much.→[More:]Even the parts with furries.
No, really, I'm not doubting it IS great, I've just only seen maybe one ish and I wasn't blown away. But everyone else is blown away by it, and I'm always looking for good new comics, 'cuz I think the "industry" is Chock-Full-O-Talent right now but somehow still often lacking in real MAGIC. So I'd love to be blown away by Finder.
I'm not a graphic novel/comic geek, so I couldn't give you specifics, shane. I did like how every little plot point wasn't explained immediately and how the dialogue was very natural.
There are many ways in which FINDER rocks, and here are a few:
All of her characters are real people in that they have lives of their own outside of the narrative. They're mostly fully-fleshed by the time Carla puts them down on paper, and she does re-visit characters and concepts again and again.
The inking is BEAUTIFUL, and she deserves to have won an Eisner for her past work in cross-hatching and whatnot. Lately, she's been slacking a little and I think it's due to her having two kids. But when she's on, she's on. I mean, look at the detail in the first panel!
The world she created is so lush and so real that she's got fodder for stories for days. Not too concerned with "how" or "why" people live in domed cities, Carla focuses on what the people do about it. In other words, sci-fi enough for those who like that sort of thing but not too sci-fi to turn away someone who's just in it for the eye-candy.
Oh and man. What eye-candy. Jaeger's the sexiest man in comics. Ever. You can take your Wolverines and your Batmans (well, but not Bruce Wayne) and your other male characters. If I had to choose one male character from comics to have a wild affair with... well, it would still be Bruce Wayne, but Jaeger's a very close second. Men and women of all varying sexualities love him. He's a PEOPLE'S man.
On a personal note, Carla's the best person to talk to if you want to learn about self-publishing and how to make it. She takes newbies in under her wing and gives sound practical advice. She's also the first person I turned to when Kelly died, and she held me for a very good long time and was so kind to me the entire weekend I stayed at her place for the Small Press Expo. I realize that this might not be a good analytical reason to pick up the book, but I can't help but believe that good people create good work.
