Is Print magazine any good?[More:]My friend's mom wants to get her kid (who's a 30-something freelance graphic illustrator- think logos, t-shirts, etc.) a magazine subscription. Neither of us know anything about this field. Can anyone help?

And while I have your attention, is there a tattoo magazine that's better than other tattoo magazines? Thanks!
Yes, Print is a good magazine--certainly one of the more respected mags for that field.

Funny you should ask—I just picked up a copy for the first time the other day (out of simple curiosity—I don’t work in the field): there were a couple of good articles, but it was expensive, and, one thing that annoyed me was you couldn’t just flick through it easily, because of all the inserts, & the like. I would imagine it would be a pretty good choice for a professional designer, though.

Ugh!I HATE those. That by itself is worth continuing to search.

Another one to look into is Communication Arts. Print and CommArts are the standards, at least at the design firms I've hung out at.

Well, the inserts are for things like really cool paper, not drugs or book-of-the-month subscriptions. A graphic designer might actually like them.

I've been an avid reader of Print for many years, although it seems to get more expensive every other month. And I'll second ComArts the recomendation, but I don't think it's as consistant and diverse as Print.

And me3dia is totally correct that the inserts in Print are usually pretty cool and worth paying attention to.

Print is the best. ComArts is good, so is HOW, so is CMYK (it's all student work). The best thing about Print is the best of annuals, but they are very pricey--however, they're included in a subscription, far as I know.

OK. Print it is, then. Thank you! I'll check out those others, too.
