14 August 2006

When I woke up this morning, my apartment looked like a crime scene. Kaylee somehow nearly tore the front of one of her pads completely off, and there was blood everywhere.[More:]

What a thing to wake up to. I retrieved Kaylee and put her in the cat carrier, called the emergency vet to let them know I was coming, called Hunter's mom to see if she could possibly come and take Hunter to school (thank goodness she could), and got to work cleaning up the blood. My arm is completely dead; she managed to leave bloody footprints in every room of the house.

Just got back from the vet. The (really cute) doctor cleaned Kaylee up and used some "tissue glue" to close the wound. She also only charged me for an exam because I arrived during a shift change and was somehow forgotten about for an hour. Here's how the pad looks now.

I am so utterly exhausted right now. It turned out to be very minor but my stress level was through the roof already at 6am. And now I'm supposed to go to work?
As I sit here typing this, she's lying next to me cleaning her wound, and Lance is right next to her as if to make sure she's okay.

They're such good cats.

My old cat Ricky did this once, and it honestly isn't as bad as it looks. She'll be fine.

Ricky's wound was caused by a fight, and I (and the vet) missed a bite on his shoulder that later turned into an abscess (cat abscesses = eeeeeewiest things ever), so give her a thorough check over the next few days to make sure there isn't a puncture mark somewhere that could turn septic.

Thanks, jan, I'm not worried about her. Just a very stressful morning.

I don't have any idea how she did it. It could have been Lance but I've never seen them fight aggressively; they play fight all the time but I'm never worried they'll injure each other. I'm at a loss.

So are you going to ask the vet out?

I advise working up to it by complementing her on her shiny coat and healthy tail first.

I am so sorry Mike. I am glad Kaylee has a good human like you to care for her.

Someday I'll tell you the story of how Tippy came home dragging his leg behind him, dislocated from his hip, with a broken fibula, and in shock... after Kaylee is all better.

awww ouchy, poor thing. I'm glad it's fixed up now.

Yowsahs. At first I thought Kaylee was your offspring and I was wondering what injury she'd sustained that had been padded! Our orange striper cat gets torn pads occasionally, we're not sure how it happens, either. I'm sure seeing blood all over the place didn't help. What a way to start a Monday!

Good grief! What a way to start a week. Sorry to hear about it, Mike, but glad to hear Kaylee's come through it okay.

jan, that is hilarious. Hee!

I laid down on the couch like two hours ago because I was so overwhelmingly tired. As I said, that was two hours ago. I feel better but it's looking like work isn't going to happen today.

I love your bubblesnaps, jan.

Eddie has been known to go into the bathroom, then rub the door hard enough that it latches shut with him in the room. He will then stick his paw under the door trying to get it open. On one occasion he tore up one of his front toe pads pretty good.

Funny you should mention that, PST; last night Lance opened a LOCKED door from the outside. I was entranced - clever boy.

But that was Lance, and his front paw, and this is Kaylee, and her back paw. Hmm.

Dude, that was like a Tom Swifty. You know, sentences like "'I clipped my fingernails too close,' Tom said quickly" and "'I wonder if I'll ever be able to play guitar like this,' Tom fretted."

Poor you for waking up to such a sight! I'm glad Kaylee is okay.
