Eeny Meeny Miney Mo... Catch a doctor by the toe... [More:]

After several hours scrolling through names on my health insurance website, I settled on a doctor for my gallstones, revealed on the CAT scan at the ER last Thursday night. He's double board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine, and he's associated with two good hospitals, Beth Israel and St. Luke's. Nu, what could be bad?

It's nerve-racking, though, picking a name from a hat, so to speak. One of my brothers is a doctor, but he lives in Connecticut and doesn't know anyone in New York. And my insurance (GHI) mainly covers New York. I'll also need to find a gynecologist, for my ovarian cysts and fibroids. It's overwhelming. Could be worse, though. That's what I tell myself. Could be worse.

The fibroids and cysts I suspected (I had surgery for a large fibroid about 13 years ago), but gallstones. Maybe it's those marbles I swallowed when I was nine.
If you're trying to catch a doctor, the best bait to use is money. Tie a twenty to your line and cast...

Thank heavens for insurance... I've been without it, and that's just no fun at all.

I suppose I should add dentist to my list.

Aw Pips. I'm sorry you've got to deal with this. Hope it all gets resolved soon.

Hey pips, just out of (my) morbid curiosity, did they size your ovarian cyst yet?

Mine was the size of a "large grapefruit". It amazed me how I could have had something like that growing in my body, yet didn't know it for a very long time.

Thanks, jrossi4r. Much appreciated.

I know what you mean, goml. The fibroid I had removed was about that size. I didn't notice it either for a long time. I had this full feeling, though, and kept popping antacids, thinking it was gas. In the end, I could feel the thing through my abdomen when I lay down, hard like a coconut. The final CT report this time around is still pending, though, so I don't know the sizes of the cysts yet. The fibroids seem small, which is good, but there are a lot of them.

My wife has fibroids. . .they apparently contributed to the very hard labor she had, birthing our daughter.

Out of earshot from her (wife), I used to describe our daughter as having exited the womb playing with one, sorta like a little football.

Pips. .I am really glad you have insurance . . Really really glad. I hope it all goes well and the copays don't eat you alive.

Now have Jon fetch something for you. Milk this thing dry.

(Idly wondering if a baby has ever been named "Fibroid" and casting a sidelong glance at jrossi4r.)

I hope it's resolved quickly, pips. I hate finding doctors, too. My insurance doesn't even print out books of listed docs anymore-too many dropping out or coming in. I had a cyst last year, but it "resolved itself", whatever that means. And I've had my gallbladder out, unexpectedly. Four tiny incisions, mostly faded now. Hope you're on your feet soon! (Until then, get jonmc to rub them...mmmm)

Pips, I so know your pain with the fibroids. I've got the same thing.
I don't know how I managed to score a good doctor, I literally picked the one closest to my house out of the phone book, but I've been super-happy with her.

Have you thought about asking your coworkers? They'd have the same insurance as you, so they have to pick from the same pool.
