The shipping news, and a rant.[More:]

My boss doesn't seem to understand that I've, you know, quit and I'm running out the clock. I mean, despite all the flowery talk about seeking new opportunities and thanks for the experiences, I told them to take their job and shove it. I am not really motivated to do as much of the crap that I am getting away from as possible in my remaining time as I possibly can. If I wasn't worried about burning a reference, I'd just start sassing people.

Welcome. To. My. World.

(It's cozy here).

Dude, as I've mentioned before, they've even busted our (the layofee's) stones about productivity. I actually took a mental health day today, since I can barely stand entering cubicle hell anymore. I have recurring nightmares that they'll keep extending the layoff date forever and I'll never be done.

Sorry about the idiot boss, Capn.

But holy shit, that shipping site is soooo cool. Thanks!

Jon, have you ever seen that episode of The New Twilight Zone or The New Outer Limits, or something, where there's a restraunt reveiwer, and he has to keep eating in a Chinese Restraunt?

Also, that looks exactly like my office, but brighter and airier.

Hey, I can see Triode's house!

Seen it? I'm living it, cap.

Well, that and other perks (the fact that we can wear jeans & t-shirts etc., listen to music) lulled me into thinking that this was a great job for awhile. But the pay and benefits were still shitty, and the guys at the top are even more rapacious. The warmer and fuzzier they come on, the worse they are. Plus the open floor plan allows girms to circulate like you wouldn't believe, and since the building used to be a warehouse, it's incredibly drafty.

That's why I'm enjoying temping. On my last day, I can act however I want. There's no pretense of missing my co-workers or really having learned a lot. The last day at my last gig I literally sat there reading gossip columns and mecha all day. When people asked me to do something, I took my sweet time if they were curt about it.

Also, Casablanca is on.

"You despise me don't you, Rick?"
"Well, I would if I gave you any thought."

Bogie is the epitome of cool.

That site is really really cool!

I notice the Coast Guard station is suspiciously free of boats. Guess they don't get tracked.

"Are my eyes really brown?"

Also, WHAT THE FLAMINGO?! I just found a photocopy of a (one would assume confidential) form that has details about me quitting (it's the requisition for my replacement), face up on the pingpong table in a high traffic area.

What kind of 2 bit operation is this?!

That is one of the single coolest maritime-related sites I have ever seen. Awesome, awesome, awesome. I wish they had one for everywhere I've ever lived.

For a second, jonmc, I thought you said you took a metal health day.

Bang your head!

I just watched the scene where the French singing drowned out the fucking Nazis. I don't know if there has ever been a more inspiring piece of footage. I've also had a few.

Divine Wino would make a great Renault. Janus woould be a good Signor Ferrari.

As the leader of all illegal activities in Casablanca, I am an influential and respected man.

Yeah, situations like that can be awkward, Capn.

At least you aren't still obliged to do stuff for your boss/company after you're bloody well done and gone <grumble> have a meeting at 7am tomorrow with former supervisor over shit that he's dragging his ass on (and all over) that got fuxored by the clinical statistician costing me publication in a great journal and now it'll only get into a good journal </grumble>

Thanks, jon, now I'm gonna have nightmares thanks to the cube-farm picture.

*shudder*
posted by deborah 20 June | 17:54
That's not even close to being the worst cubes can get. At least the partitions are shoulder height and you can see a window.

Imagine instead a cube farm in the sub basement with partitions only waist high (ala Happy Time in Dead Like Me). Add variable air conditioning that means you experience sub tropical and English room temperatures everyday.

I know those cubes aren't really bad, Mitheral, but I worked in places just like that for 17 years. I have mini panic attacks every time I think about going back into a situation like that.
