There's a man America needs now, like never before. and his name is [More:] Billy Jack! America's favorite karate-kicking, ex-Green Beret, pacifist Indian. In a cool hat. Kidding aside, me and pips watched the DVD of that flick yesterday, and while in many ways it's patently ridculous, it's also still kind of stirring in spite of itself and an interesting time capsule of the early 70's. Tom Laughlin and wife (who are have now been married 50 years, and as the first link above shows are still busy and opinionated as ever) made the film together on a low budget and it was one of the biggest hits of that year (spawning two, sequels) but most young people have never heard of it. Where are you Billy, when we need you the most?

(for atmosphere)*

*odd side note: the band that sang that apparently went Satanic to the point of recording a Black Mass. Makes the lyrics seem weird now)
I may hafta getcha one of those hats, Jack. : )

Check out the description of the new Billy Jack movie, Billy Jack's Moral Revolution. There are so many awesome sentences here that it's hard to pick one. But here's one:

"Think of Forrest Gump whereby Forrest appears on screen and talks with John Kennedy, and you’ll get a hint of how real this unique film will be."

Oh yeah, Laughlin's a mite nutty. But it's a beautiful nuttiness, and I share some of his earnest integrationalist hippie meets High Plains Drifter sensibility for some reason.

Plus, he can outweird David lynch without even trying.

My father loved Billy Jack. And he had the hat, too.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend...

He had the hat... that's awesome!

Best my father could do was an Eisenhower jacket.

He would call for the hat in times of outrage. "He said what? Go fetch my Billy Jack hat!"

He votes republican now. *sigh*

Heh, my dad was somewhere in between. My aunt he went though his Elvis phase, where he wore a leather jacket and greaed his hair into a pomp, but he also was supposedly a fiend for Robert Goulet's "Some Enchanted Evening."

Some enchanted evening... will you sing it to me later? : )

(maybe after the six-pack?)

I remember going to a drive-in with my family and seeting Billy Jack (I had to have been six or seven); which makes it the first movie I remember seeing.
