My friend died Sunday Maybe you've seen this on the news. I don't know why I'm putting it here, really, except that I just want people to know about Annmarie and what a strange, beautiful, amazing person she was. It's hard for that to come across in a tiny little picture and an "OMG! Killer Alligator Rampage!" news story.

[More:]Annmarie was absolutely the most passionate person I have ever known. The taste of good bread and cheese could literally bring her to tears. Her drawings and prints were full of pale colors and delicate lines but there was still an undercurrent of something visceral and frightening and maybe even disgusting. Annmarie was fascinated by the dirt and the stains and the ugly and ignored and abandoned parts of life, but she never seemed morbid or frightening. She found those things beautiful, and she was beautiful, and she was able to make other people see the things she loved as beautiful, too.
Anyway, that's my clumsy attempt to tell you a little about my friend. Her blog is here, she can explain herself better than I can.
:-( I'm so sorry for your loss.

This is sad. She looks like a real firecracker.

Cilantro (no jokes about the name, I promise), I'm so sorry that you lost your friend. What a horrible thing.

I'm also very sorry for making light of the (idiotic) news article that documented the recent spate of alligator attacks. Annmarie and the others who died deserve more respect than the media's attempt to turn the attacks into this summer's Sharkapalooza.

Annmarie sounds very much like someone I really would have liked to know. So very sorry.

I'm sorry, cilantro.

I didn't see any of her work on her blog. It sounds interesting, is there somewhere else we could find some? (Or am I just missing it on the blog?)

Wow. It is haunting to read much of her blog now. Her writing paints a portrait of a very beautiful person with a great love of life.

If there is anything I can do, let me know.

I am glad this place gives people a life beyond the newspaper and that people share their personal antecdotes here. It reminds me to be less self-absorbed and consider each day. I may forget in five minutes but I know I am better off for the five minutes of introspection and reflection it gave me.

So, thank you Cilantro, and everyone who shares their personal lives with us here.

It matters.

Really sorry to hear about that cilantro. Your description of Annmarie sounds so very like friends I have, and although I can't imagine exactly what you're feeling, It makes me sadder to know that such a person could die. From your description and her blog, she sounded marvelous; Artistic, vital and very loving.

My heart is with you and Annmarie's family and friends.

Mudpuppie- please don't apologize. Annmarie's friends and I see the inherent ridiculousness in the news coverage, it's something that we can laugh about, actually. I mean, as if the situation isn't surreal enough already, Annmarie's partner at the clothing store/art gallery where she was working as an artist-in-residence, Robert Spees, talked to BILL O'REILLY on FOX NEWS last night. It's just... beyond comprehension. (In the minute or so that he talked to him over the sattelite feed before the actual brief interview, Robert found Bill to be a complete dick. Surprising!)

And thank you, everyone, for your kind words. There will be a memorial show of her work at the gallery very soon, I will post pictures here or a link to the pictures as soon as I can.

Cilantro, I would like to simply echo what others have said, it does sound like the world is a little poorer without her in it. I also look forward to seeing some of her work.

My condolences to you, her friends, and family. Yes, the media coverage seemed small-spirited and ridiculous. Thank you cilantro.

small_ruminant, I think that's a genius re-spelling of verklempt/ferklempt to highlight the "farkiness" of the media coverage.

How terrible, cilantro. Part of me can't help but think she would have looked at her death differently as well. Her partner must be devastated. Condolences.
