In five weeks, my personal light cone will pass the fourth brightest star in the sky - Arcturus. [More:]Arcturus is also a Heavy metal band, a genomics type company and a Networking company. Arcturus is known as Hokule'a - The star of Joy and is mentioned twice in The Book Of Job. Here's the Wikipedia Article about Arcturus.

Which stars can just about see you being born, and what significance do they have?
Seems like Ophiuchi was up there and representing during my nativity.... but

Significance?? As in...? :) ...It was night and stars were visible?

Wanna buy a crystal? :D

Your feeble attempts at tricking me into revealing my age are laughable. Give it up arcturus-boy.

As in, what does the star bring up when you look for it on the internet.
So for me, My heavenly light cone aura is influenced by Norwegian Heavy Metal Bands and genomics companies.

What this says about me is questionable... :-D

taz: I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those pesky meddling kids.

Also, they've been reading metafilter on Alpha Centauri for 2 1/2 years now. The poor souls at Alpha Canis Majoris have 2 years to wait before they can start reading posts.

The only significance it has for me is that I'm currently researching the Chandra satellite and Chandra has observed the Ophiuchi cluster.

Why do they call it a cone? It's a hemisphere.

In three dimensions - it's a sphere.
In 4 dimensions (+time), it's a cone.

Also, there's something wrong with that app, because it only uses the date and it should be using the time as well. One's wave-front is also a function of wavelength. In the visible electromagnetic spectrum, the earth shields portions of the wave front, but at the extreme ends (very long wave emf and very short wave particles like neutrinos) of the spectrum, matter doesn't really interact much with the wave front.

Ah, I get it. If we're talking instantaneous nativity event, it's the surface of a hemisphere. If we are talking total lifetime, it depends on your perigrinations and is a complex surface bounded by an expanding sphere.

Me, I've spent my entire life mostly around lattitude 49 N. So I'd have a sort of fuzzy sphere with a conical hole in it (the slant height is due to the combination of the lattitude and the inclination of the earth's axis. There are some stars in a roughly 50 degree cone around the southern celestial pole that have never seen me.

Gaspode, on the other hand, is a much better rounded personality, light cone-wise speaking.

Interesting visualization exercise.

on preview: In a 4-d projection it's a cone, but we don't directly experience time as a spacial dimension. If you project frequency/wavelength as the 5th dimension, it turns into a fuzzy blend of a surface combining a cone and a sphere.

Alpha Bootis is in my heavenly light cone aura. Which would be an awesome name for a low-budget space porno.

In a 4-d projection it's a hypercone.

Ben & Jerry's should have a free hypercone day.

I've said it before... I'm older than dirt, and six months younger than quonsar.
