25 April 2006

This thread has three short questions/requests lurking inside it. Three questions or requests from you could hole up here too. Answers could join them all, making for a happy, happy family.[More:]

1. Sure, this recent Threadless is cool. But I want this one reprinted! Which, um, requires reprint requests to Threadless (scroll down on page)...

B. From recently installed software, I have all kinds of damn programs that start as soon as I boot up my home PC. Help a poor idiot out: Is there somewhere central on XP Home I can go to decide what programs start when I boot?

The Other Thing. My CD drive is dying. Can I install a CD/DVD burner in its place and simply set the master/slave pins the same way as the old CD was set?

UmTks! Your turn.
1. Put in reprint request for you.

B. Try this: Startup Control Panel I haven't had a Windows machine in a couple years, so there may be better apps out there...

The other thing: I don't see why not, again, a couple of years...

1. I've got a pal with a computer (XP), and thousands of records, and very little technical savvy. Worse, though, he's one of those cats who thinks he's Mr. Computer, and so his reach exceeds his grasp, and, if the option is available, he'll often inadvertantly screw things up. What vinyl-ripping method would you suggest?

2. How can I persuade people to come to my public library computer classes? The promotions budget is just slightly above zero.

3. What kind of person, these days, still thinks of plagiarism as a viable proposition?

Oops, wrong order.

1: Sent a request.

B: There are some central places in the registry, and there are the various Start Menu startup folders. Tweak programs, like TweakUI or X-Setup (or System Mechanic, but I wouldn't recommend it, because it's a pay program), do an even better job of centralizing these activities. Or HijackThis.

The other thing: well, you'll have to install drivers and whatnot, though one of Windows few strengths is that it's usually good at doing that kind of thing automatically.

And (forgive me if I'm telling you something blindingly obvious) when you say 'set the pins the same way,' you mean set the new drive as secondary master (or cable-select, or whatever), same as the old one, not set the pins in the precise physical configuration as on the old drive.

Can folks put in a reprint request for this one too, in guys' size Large? Thanks!

Hmm. Maybe set it up as an "event"?

"Come learn basic computer skills and discuss them in a friendly setting and meet like-minded people! Free donuts and coffee/tea will be served!"

Make it seem fun?

Seriously. Donuts are cheap, and free food brings people in. All the animal welfare 501Cs I know seem to put on some event with free food to first draw people in.

Well, I was really damned hoping I could just pop the pins in the same order, 'cuz I'm that kind of idiot, but thanks for reminding me that pin configuration varies. There's nothing wrong with trial-and-error though, is there? I installed my DVD burner and goofed up the pin setting the first time with no ill effects.

Some idiot student who doesn't realize his/her prof can just pull out a few random paragraphs from his paper and Google them?

Will do, matildaben.

THNAKS, ALL.

Woke up.
Smelled the coffee.
Awaiting further instructions.

Nah, trial-and-error shouldn't hurt anything. The worst thing that'll happen is that the BIOS won't recognize one or more of the drives. You can also check the BIOS to see whether the old drive is primary or secondary and master or slave. Or, presuming the old drive still has the label showing the various jumper settings, you could look at that.

LOL, a good friend helped me buy my 'puter piece-by-piece at a show, then he put it together and programmed it. Then a couple months later he lost his job doing corporate computer installations. My master/slave configuration has always been a little wonky...

Yes there is. Click Start-->Run; Type Msconfig and press [return].
