Ask Mecha Help me edit text![More:]I have been asked to do stuff with a bunch of marked-up text files. The files came with a recommendation to use Text Wrangler or QUED/M - but those are both Mac and I only have access to a PC. Sooo... can anyone recommend a good PC alternative that I can download? Ktxbye. XXX
I use textpad and I love it!!
Common consensus is to use either textpad or ultraEdit. see this AskMe Question for more.

Don't know if this helps, but the highest rated, most popular freeware Windows text editor download on Tucows is Crimson Editor. Ultraedit-32 is the highest rated, most popular overall. Here's a list of all Windows text editors sorted by rating; there are nine applications with a top score of 5 cows, and you can see popularity and price info (shareware, freeware, etc.) in the info on the left.

(I don't know why Tucows doesn't have TextPad... at least I don't see it in the list)

If you only need it for a project, you could try a trial of CuteHTML, which I have found to be quite good.

My computer science professor in first year got us all using EMACS for Windows, forced us to learn all the keyboard shortcuts and wahtnot in the lab, and everything I've tried since has been lacking in some way or another so I keep going back.

is there a BBEdit for PC? wouldn't that work?

No BBEdit for PCs. A lot of people like HomeSite.
