12 April 2006

you are going to be shocked to hear this [More:]
...but I bought more plants today. Some more herbs and some flowers as well. Especially happy that I found some lime thyme and a neat variegated caryopteris that I almost bought online last year for 17.99. This one was 4.99. =) Well, actually my brother bought them. But for me.

He came home Saturday evening and is staying through next Sunday for my birthday since he could not come in during the week of or the weekend before my birthday. Today we drove around and I showed him the tornado damage and we visited some nurseries and he bought me plants. weretable's garden is doing fairly well despite weretable being broke. I think tomorrow we shall go to Branson, I doubt if I come home from Branson with plants but I might find something else to beg for or something interesting to take pictures of. Dogwoods are in full bloom right now, so that might be nice.

I saw some plants growing at one nursery and asked what they were and the guy just pulled up a handful and told me to take them home, since they had none to sell. Free plants. Sweet.
hey, do you know of air-cleaning plants that don't produce any pollen? and are easy to keep alive and healthy?

Pothos vines, amber. Super easy, grow fast, nice and green. But ole were here probably knows a ton more than I...

You didn't buy any cilantro did you? Did you???!!

I love big bushels of Golden Pothos for air-cleaning.

I don't have any currently, but I love finding inexpensive, nearly root-bound specimins way cheap then immediately transplanting them into a larger pot and watching them just explode.

They're hard to kill, too. Hard to overwater with proper drainage, and underwatering them to a point just makes the leaves pretty and causes excess leaves to fall off.

Spiders and other similar non-flowering leafy-viney plants also seem to do well.

They're hard to kill, too.

It's true. I have a pothos that I've had through three loooong relationships and 4 cross-country moves. It's on it's last legs because I forget to water it. But it's still with me.

NASA did research on this, I have a mag with an article around here someplace. What I recall:

Pothos and spiders as said, and also philodendrons are really good at removing formaldehyde, aloe vera is also good but not as good.

Mums are great at removing benzene from the air but they flower of course. No clue how much pollen they produce. They are kinda fussy plants too. Shallow-rooted and too much water or too little kills them inside or out. Gerbera daisies are good at this too.

All around filtering plants include english ivy, peace lily, weeping fig, mother-in-laws tongue, janet craig dracena, rubber plant and boston fern.

I think orchids are good at filtering too, but that might be me misremembering.

One LARGE plant for 100 square feet of space seems to be the general "rule" for number of plants.

Of course not all of these plants are non-pollen producing but I listed them anyway.

Several (if not most) of these plants are poisonous, so look up what plants bother kitties or whatever pets you might have.

And I didn't answer the "easy to keep healthy" bit because to be honest, I am not the person to ask. If I do not neglect a plant in some way due to being too busy or whatever, nothing dies on me. *shrug*

I think I read or heard that Bromeliads clean the air at night when you're around and not during the day.

But maybe that's just silliness.
