Top 5? So, what are everyone's top 5 bands/artists? [More:]I brought this up in irc tonight, but thought it might be worth posting here.

For the record, mine are:
1) The Clash
2) The Jam
3) The Band
4) Rheostatics
5) Bobby Dylan

As mullac mentioned the Replacements, I realized I should have found a way to squeeze them in there too, but...I don't wanna push the Rheos out. I like those canadian boys a lot.
the Clash, the Stones, Cash, The New Bomb Turks and Willie Dixon

Hrrmmm.

1. Straitjacket Fits
2. Pixies
3. The Chills
4. Girls Against Boys
5. Radiohead

(hon. mentions: Fugazi, AC/DC, Talking Heads, The Clash)

I have no idea how to answer this at the current time. I listen to too much stuff now and it is all circling around in my brain. Ask me again sometime. Yes.

Eide just said in IRC that his real list is:

Terence Trent Darby
Roxette
Dead or Alive
Clint Black
Warrant

Weird.

1. Bruce Springsteen
2. Bruce Springsteen
3. Bruce Springsteen
4. Bruce Springsteen
5. Bruce Springsteen

(perhaps I have lived too long in Jersey)

All Bruce, all the time

I tried making a list a couple of times but it didn't work. Tired. Miles Davis would be on there somewhere.
posted by selfnoise 15 January | 23:07
I'm between favourites just now, but I'll tell you 5 of what I like (in no particular order).

Tricky
Mike Oldfield
Refused
Salmonella Dub
Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields/Marriner

Almost ran: Radiohead

What weretable said.

Go to my last.fm profile to see what I'm listening to nowadays.
posted by matildaben 15 January | 23:10
Pfft, y'all are copping out. The rest of the bands won't be offended, I swear.

1) Skinny Puppy
2) The Swans
3) Antisect
4) The Wedding Present
5) Low

5.

Just 5?

You're mad.
posted by Frisbee Girl 15 January | 23:14
Wilco, The Shins, Radiohead, Coldplay, The Eagles.

I am not cool.
posted by kyleg 15 January | 23:15
OK, that last list probably represents my family's annoyance with my Bruce fixation (they should be deported from Jersey for failure to love the Boss). The real faves: Bruce, Boby Dylan, the Beatles and the Stones, plus Charlie Parker, with Bird being the most talented by far, yet Bruce being my favorite as he speaks to me in a way the others don't.
posted by caddis 15 January | 23:20
C'mon Fris, just a quick top 5. All time. If you had to throw out all your cds tongiht, except for ones by 5 artists, who would survive? Tonight?
posted by richat 15 January | 23:24
The Eagles? kyleg, that is the uncoolest ever I think. Worse that Eid. I was with you at the beginning of the list though, then...it kinda petered out.
posted by richat 15 January | 23:27
OKAY THIS ONE IS BEST EVER

it's the study of the chemistry between you.... and me
oooh! gimme that vibe!
posted by weretable and the undead chairs 15 January | 23:32
What it came down to is, if I were listening to the radio, and a song by any artist came on, what would make me not change the station for any reason. If you don't like the Eagles, get the fuck out of my cab.

Also, Coldplay is better than most of you think, even though the new album is some seriously weak shit.

Musicians:

—Camper van Beethoven
—Jimi Hendrix
—Quasi
—Granfaloon Bus
—The Flaming Lips

Artists:

R.B. Kitaj (the finest draftsman of his generation; possibly the finest ever)
J.Mcn. Whistler (this is the only piece of art I "live with" that is not something that I made)
Orson Welles

Ok, richat, I'll negotiate: for one week, I could handle being limited (in no particular order) to:

Thomas Newman
DoMakeSayThink
Iron & Wine
Spoon
Cesaria Evora
posted by Frisbee Girl 15 January | 23:54
In no particular order: Holly Cole, Johnny Cash, Marianne Faithfull, Louis Soldat, Leonard Cohen.

Still any of those could change on any given day. As far as my tastes , of all the arts music is for me the most mutable and ephemeral. If I like a painter or photographer or author it's pretty much the same degree of like now, tomorrow, or next decade but musicians move around in my rankings from mood to mood. I think I've always seen music as the most immediate and least of all the arts in some way.

Also Coldplay knows how to evoke a feeling like few bands do and the new album is very weak.

Has anyone actually ever heard of any of mine?

1. After Forever
2. Brave (they played a show last night - it was awesome!)
3. Opeth
4. Nevermore
5. Tristania
posted by mike9322 15 January | 23:59
I am familar with After Forever anyway.
posted by weretable and the undead chairs 16 January | 00:00
narrowing it down to 5 is tough for me, too, and it varies from different tomes in my life. and I've always been more of a 'song' guy than an 'artist' guy, but what the hell

Ramones
Bob Dylan
Ronnie Spector
Dictators
Little Richard

1. Joy Division
2. The Promise Ring
3. The Smiths/Morrissey
4. The Velvet Underground

Having just watched the DVD box set of Undeclared, I'm nostalgic for the soundtrack of my college days. So the bands getting most play from me at the moment are:
The Replacements
REM
Elvis Costello
Dinosaur Jr
XTC
But ask me again tomorrow and it will change.

And eideteker, that picture of that sick little boy makes me sad. I hope he's OK.

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, WERETABLE!

Mingus, The Who, The Clash, Fugazi, The Jam. Nothing dazzling, just old reliable stuff.

The Clash
The Grateful Dead
The Band
Los Lobos
Wilco

Yes, I'm old. And sort of an unrepentent hippy. I never saw the Clash live and only saw the later Non-Robertson Band live but these are/were all great bands to see in person.
posted by octothorpe 16 January | 07:59
This is tricky as the list could change week to week and month to month, but entering into the spirit of it I would say (in no particular order):

1) XTC (always in the top 5 and have been for a long time)
2) Steely Dan
3) Loudon Wainwright III
4) David Bowie
5) The New Pornographers

In no particular order and subject to change.

Fugazi
Shellac / Big Black The Jesus Lizard
Built to Spill
Silkworm Husker Du

I wish I could've been there to meet mr. g'pode this weekend. Sometime he and I will talk about the music. And, I forgot Mission of Burma! ...and... ...and... ...and...
posted by safetyfork 16 January | 11:30
My Last.FM profile settled in pretty early and hasn't budged a whole lot from a year ago, even though I've been listening to tons of new music.

1. Nine Inch Nails
2. White Stripes
3. Arcade Fire
4. Aimee Mann
5. Tanita Tikaram

I'm pretty sure I'd be happy being stuck with them, if I had to be. There's a bunch more in 6-15 [Young Marble Giants, the Blue Up?, Neutral Milk Hotel, Broken Social Scene, Dresden Dolls, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Liz Phair, Pulp, Nellie McKay] that it would be hard for me to give up voluntarily -- but this isn't Desert Island Discs, then, is it?
posted by stilicho 16 January | 13:36
Dammit, how did I forget Talking Heads? Put them in my list and bump the Eagles down to six, it saves me a little cool. But they're still awesome.
posted by kyleg 16 January | 13:37
VNV Nation
The Smiths
The Clash
Depeche Mode
The Sisters of Mercy.

Why yes, I do happen to wear a lot of black...
