Monte Ne Arkansas [More:]

As I promised to Mudpuppie and others if I was able to go, I took pictures. A handful of pictures are up, I will add more later. I would like to go back because I did not take as many pictures as I wanted and I also did not walk all around the area as it takes quite a bit of time.

For those unaware (most of you I guess), Monte Ne was a city/project created by one man. There was a 1,000 seat amphitheater with curved concrete benches (which was really impressive in the early 1900s when it was built), a planned pyramid, a hotel, a restaraunt and more. All of it was covered up in the early 1960s when Beaver Lake was created.
more info here

I did not get any pictures of the foundation of Oklahoma Row either, which I was right next to. As I said, I want to go back again soon, so..

Thanks, I love this kind of stuff. I spent a haunting afternoon, years ago, exploring the muddy ruins of Marcus, Washington, a ghost town that was innundated by a damming project in the 40s and that reemerges only in extreme low water.

And a great link to the Arkansas Roadside Traveler. Is that your site?

Nah, I just wanted something to tell people what it was that I was showing them. No clue who runs the site, I just found it via google.

I need to go back when I can walk all around the area and get pictures of some of the stuff that is sticking up but can only be seen from the opposite side. It might be more visible soon anyway, we are not predicted to have enough rainfall to stop the lowering phase until early March when the spring thunderstorms start coming in earnest.

There is an area of the amphitheater that goes back into the ground and you can dive in the summer and go back into it. I did not know that until today, a guy there was telling me all about doing it.

That is too cool... kinda eerie, too. I especially like the old hotel building.

Well, apparently that might not be the hotel. Heh. Someone told me they moved the hotel out to save it. I need to research and find out what in the heck that building is. Also someone told me that you can go downstairs in that building and see caves or something. I have no clue if that is correct, but nobody bothered telling me before I went so I did not worry about going inside. Oh well, I want to go back anyway. Just one more reason.

He moved to Ogden, UT and went into real estate. While there he concieved and staged a wild west version of Mardi Gras, even importing parade royalty from New Orleans.

Well, I'm sure that went over well. From both perspectives.
