15 January 2006

Hello from a bar wall in lower Manhattan . On what will probably go down in history as the weirdest, wildest meet-up in history. [More:] There were illicit substances, live music weird celebrities, small children covered in christmas lights, neon pool, live 60's rock, scrabble carpets, watermelon malt liquor, and audio shoutouts featuring lusty sing-alongs.
You tease. Tell us more...it sounds fascinating. Who did the shoutout? Whoever it was, thank you for finally including me! I'm not invisible. Yahoo!
posted by iconomy 15 January | 14:03
Gaspode wrote it, but all of us were yelling out names. And hopefully the audio shout-outs (and they were doozies) will be up soon (LeeJay, I'm looking your direction).

The party started in a quasi-legal loft on Warren and ended in a bar on Murray Street. A guy who used to play in the Talking Heads played solo guitar, stuff like 'Tracks of My Tears,' and 'Little Bit Of Soul." I got very drunk and high and danced with aging hippies.

Yay! I'm glad you guys had fun, and you remembered me!

Remember the scene in Midnight Cowboy where Ratso & the Cowboy wind up at that Studio 54 type of place. This was similar to that but geekier. It's one of those nights you pull out in front of your kids to prove that you were once hep.

Thanks for the shoutout! Sounds like a most swingin' time.

Still waiting on the audio.

You guys don't take nearly enough pictures.
posted by matildaben 15 January | 14:14
Man, I knew I should have come up for this one. Alas.

(And no shoutout? *tears*)
posted by YouCanCallMeAl 15 January | 14:16
You know, I've never seen a picture of gaspode before, so all of this time I've just been *assuming* she's cute. Now I know she's totally adorable and has attitude to boot.
posted by matildaben 15 January | 14:16
only one person had a camera and he showed up late. And we were having difficulty locating our own feet by that point.

And I wasn't trying to do the funky Chicken. I was aiming for this pose, but I am not James Dean, sadly. Or perhaps not sadly, all things considered.

On preview: the 'pode's husband Steve-O is a third-degree mensch, too.

Get outta town!? Man I wish I had been there. Jammy bastards.
posted by dabitch 15 January | 14:22
I was expecting gaspode to look more scientist-y. Like, in a lab coat with a clipboard.
posted by orthogonality 15 January | 14:25
matildaben, my photo has been in the metachat flickr pool since we started -- you obviously haven't been looking hard enough!

It need not be said that there was way too much alcohol already drunk by the time we wrote the shoutouts. My main objective was to remember iconomy and sister havana because I forgot them last time. To everyone else that was forgotten...we still love you. Our tiny, addled, alcohol-soaked brains just couldn't cope.

jon, I have a sneaking suspicion that we fucked up the audio shoutouts.
posted by gaspode 15 January | 14:26
well, later in the evening she vivisected us all, if that makes you feel any better.
posted by jonmc 15 January | 14:26
send LeeJay an email.

She didn't wear the white lab coat because she knew it would make my hormones explode. And she signed an oath to be humane.

send LeeJay an email.

I did last night, jon.
posted by gaspode 15 January | 14:31
Oh, well, perhaps our semi-harmonized rendition of "Like A Rolling Stone," is lost in the ether.
posted by jonmc 15 January | 14:33
Excellent! Damn i wish I lived in NYC. ANd wtf? no shoutout? *bawls*
posted by chewatadistance 15 January | 14:45
That's quite a beer you've got there Jon. You would no doubt do well in the Northern Territory (Oz) with the Darwin Stubbies.
And yay! for the shoutout.
posted by peacay 15 January | 14:54
The Schism travelled northward(though Dorian's friend called it southward) in search of food after huddling in a very spacious bank lobby (which would be perfect for the next meetup) and so we missed the photos/shoutout part. We didn't, however, miss the Talking/No-Head or the electric kid and his death-defying leaps. Thanks for the good time, all.

Sorry goatdog, I would have remembered you after that awesome shoutout I was given, but I was miserable & left way before photos.
posted by dame 15 January | 15:47
That's ok. It wasn't my shed.
posted by goatdog 15 January | 15:53
it was mine, you shed-killer!

I love getting shoutouts. Thanks guys!
posted by dodgygeezer 15 January | 16:07
Damn Schism.

There was also the amazing Zelda, many games of pool (and only one won by actually sinking the black at the correct time), jamesons, caviar on crackers, snow, and a smackfu on our couch because he missed the train home.
posted by gaspode 15 January | 16:10
I saw Zelda there earlier. Did she perform later? (!)
posted by nobody 15 January | 16:12
there was caviar? why didn't you tell me? I was stabbing hot dogs in pools of tepid water and crunching those miniature toast slices for sustenance.

(although I got to smoke good chronic and slug JD with the old hippies! nyah!)
posted by jonmc 15 January | 16:13
You didn't find the caviar? i don't like it, which is why I didn't mention it, I guess.

I forgot to also say that Steve had a great time, and I think is a little less afraid of crazy internet people now. Heh.
posted by gaspode 15 January | 16:28
*Pleased as all get out to receive my first shoutout. Helps Jon rebuild his shed.
posted by richat 15 January | 16:40
No shoutout? Jeez - I'm so minor-league. Fine, play your neon pool and have your fun. *waaaah!*

Also, my post kidney-stone 24 hour urine collection is going well. I have to collect all my pee-pee in a big orange jug with a lid that has a dishwasher detergent type spout on it. It's about a third full now.

After it's full, I have to shake it vigorously and fill a smaller container. Lime wedge optional.

Then a guy comes by in a truck to pick it up.
posted by jonmc 15 January | 17:37
I would have done shoutouts, but left long before the cameras came out (I left with The Schism).
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 15 January | 18:16
My first shoutout. There goes my cherry.

This makes me wish I could've hit it. Mrs.mosch skews way negative on internet people.
posted by mosch 15 January | 20:27
That crazy old lady (Zelda) is a performer???

Omg she's my hero. I already loved her for her clothes.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 15 January | 22:19
It's OK about the shout- out, I'm sure you were thinking of me...

There was a documentary a few years ago about Zelda.

Still in LA, both the North Hollywood Dutton's--which was one of my neighborhood havens--and Aron Records are shutting down.
