Hrrmmm looking through I would like to think I would have scored somewhere in the 50s. but maybe not, considering the caliber of players.
posted by gaspode 28 December | 12:41
If I'd correctly identified every song I know in that list, including title and artist, I'd have scored 28 points.
posted by mr_crash_davis 28 December | 12:45
OK who was the other person who got Sci Fi Wasabi, and who was the other person who got Blind by Talking Heads? I'm shocked that only 2 people got Dry the Rain - I thought everyone loved that song! And it looks like my only unique score was the Beck song.

The one that was killing me was the Modest Mouse. I knew I knew it, but my brain just kept circling around "male indie guitar band from the last 5 years" and didn't get any closer.

Looking at the list, I know a lot more of these songs than I recognized. I'll have to go listen to it again when I get home, hitting myself in the face multiple times.

Also, how many people thought St. James Infirmary was Minnie the Moocher? At least 2 of us did.

Sorry to let you down, panoptican.

I'm very very pleased with second place. I thought I'd done quite badly as some of the tunes sounded very recognisable to me but I wasn't quite able to nail them. On reviewing the list though it seems I did about as well as I was going to (I should've got Karma Police, I knew it sounded like it but the cadence didn't seem right).

Well done oh pollo!
posted by dodgygeezer 28 December | 13:02
There's 7 or 8 I really should have gotten that I didn't.

I'm already thinking up ideas for a diabolical contest of my own along the same lines.
posted by matildaben 28 December | 13:04
There were a few songs I thought were gimmies that no one got (Gold Digger? Come on, I thought that was permanently etched in everyone's brain by now) and some that I thought were really too obscure that more than one person got.

This was a lot of fun, I hope you do do it matildaben, since I'd like to play.

oh man, even tho I bombed, I'm pleased to see most of the ones i got right only two other people did as well. And why did I substitute the Cure for Green Day at the last second? Grah!

This was way fun, and taught me about timestamps on Winamp to boot. Let's do one again soon!

posted by Lipstick Thespian 28 December | 15:58
Heh, like crash, I determined my maximum possible score, and it was liberally in the 40s. If I'd tried really hard, though, I would have been lucky to crack 30. ;-)

What a great contest though!
posted by stilicho 28 December | 16:01
Green Day! Arghh! That drove me nuts for hours!
posted by miles 28 December | 17:01
I think I got 48 if I understand the scoring. That was fun, and tough as hell. I missed a bunch I thought I knew.

who was the other person who got Blind by Talking Heads?

how many people thought St. James Infirmary was Minnie the Moocher?

/me coughs

trondant, I wouldn't have gotten that one if I hadn't been recently liberally imbibing the Talking Heads box set. The "Naked" album is definitely one of my less favorites.

Hey Capn, I need to know the winning charity before the first of the year [for a' hem... tax porpoises]. Speak up pollo loco!

Who you like?

If I don't hear before Dec 31 I am sending my 100 Kanucks to relief in Pakistan.
posted by Mr T 29 December | 01:08
You will know as soon as I know. I figured I'd give it a week or two, and if oh pollo(!) doesn't respond, the runner up will have to assume his or her duties.
posted by Capn 29 December | 01:17
Just to be on the safe side I just donated 100 (USD!) to aid for the Pakistan earthquake. I hope no one objects. If el pollo comes up with a recipient before new years I will honor that donation too.

Wow! Thanks guys. Capn that was a hell of a test and a great contest, thoroughly enjoyed it - Dodgygeezer you were a worthy adversary, we shall battle again no doubt.
Mr T, your donation to the Pakistan Earthquake Fund is great.Capn if you could donate your money to EFF that would be brilliant. Thanks again to both of you for providing the entertainment and being so generous.

Donated!
Thanks again everyone.

I'm the only one who got Tempted?

i though that was one of the easier ones.
posted by amberglow 29 December | 18:44
(and if you had included her voice, i definitely would have gotten Shirley Bassey)
posted by amberglow 29 December | 18:45
and didn't Slade do Run Runaway?
posted by amberglow 29 December | 18:45
On the plus side, I got a bunch of the 1 and 2 star ones. Too bad I sucked it on the rest, and got (probably) somewhere in the 30-40 point range.
posted by mosch 29 December | 22:21
(and if you had included her voice, i definitely would have gotten Shirley Bassey)
She sings "looooooooove" at around 2:34

and didn't Slade do Run Runaway?
Mayhaps, but I promise that that is the Great Big Sea version.

I am the other person who got CIBO MATTO NINE TEEN NINETY NINE.

I'm handicapped by never having heard [of] most of these bands. And I'm still sure that someone sampled two notes of the Del-tones' bass in there. And, yes, I misidentified Louis Armstrong as Cab Calloway.

Also, how the hell did you guys not get Trip Like I Do? I thought everyone was listening to that on endless repeat in 1996.
