01 December 2005

@#!*&%#!~!% So I was going to go home early because it is snowing like a mother[More:], and since I only learned to drive for the first time this spring, I have never driven in snow before. I wanted to be safe. But when I went down to drive home (about an hour ago now), my key broke off in the ignition. So now I am back in my office, calling AAA and the dealership and trying to figure out if I can get home safely.
Aw, fuck. That sucks, matildaben. I hope AAA get there soon.

Damn, I'm sorry to hear it. I also heard it wasn't sticking out there yet (hopefully that'll speed up the AAA response).

Latest news: Good news that it wasn't an expensive transponder key and they'll cut me a new one for $8. Don't know yet what the estimate will be for labor to get the old piece out. Tow truck should be here in under an hour.

I've had my key break off in the ignition before. If you line up the 'stump' of the key with the broken bit inside the ignition, you might be able to get it to turn. I drove around for months that way...

PS. I could be wrong about the sticking, I'm getting my weather info from the amberglow birthday thread.

PPS. I made an extra disc for the cmonkey swap and had planned on sending it to you as a surprise, but maybe now is a better time to tell you something good/nice/fun! (I haven't mailed them yet -- still need to work out the cover).

PPPS (on preview): Yay!

Tow is here. I'll report back when I get home. If you don't hear from me for a few hours, send in the cavalry.

Triple comment on the :04. Wow! Good work, you all owe me a coke though.

That'll be $103, please.

$104. It's sticking, now.

I heart you, Safetyfork. I'll send you mine too.

The tow truck driver was a simultaneously gruff and friendly 60-something white-haired man with a beard (Santa Claus?), who showed me how to start the car with the stump of the key. By this time the snow was coming down fast in big clumpy flakes, not sticking, but melting and slightly re-freezing in the consistency of a slurpee. I knew if it got to be too much after dark it would freeze and be icy, so I drove home instead of going to Bellevue to get the replacement key from the Nissan dealer. I'll just drive with the stump for a couple of days and then go get it fixed later. Please do not pass this information along to any car thieves who live near my street. (I brought my precious CD carrier inside just in case.)

Hey, Florence, I see you got your name changed back! Good deal.

Up north on the border here, it's 27 and sticking. The streets are starting to freeze. 'Bout an inch. Nobody knows how to drive in it. Sheesh.

Damn, now that I'm safe and warm, I'm not helpless and pitiful anymore and I'm not getting any responses on my thread. Oh look, I stubbed my toe! Waaaah.
posted by matildaben 01 December | 18:27
it's a sign, matilda---if you had left then something would've happened.

I'm here, matildaben. Glad you made it home safe. Now it's my turn. Mush!

matildaben - there was an askme with some (hopefully) helpful links on getting a broken key out of an ignition. Glad you're home safely!

I had trouble turning the ignition key this morning, but eventualy I got it. It didn't really matter though, because my steering column was frozen and I couldn't turn the wheel!

Wow. Car Trouble Thursday. Glad you got home in one piece, matildaben. I say we make gallons of soup and come out of hibernation in, say, March?

I would respond to your thread, but that means you'd have two more than mine, so I'm not.
