Is today the day I quit my job? Predict within.[More:]While I love working in human services, my boss is just so mindbendingly evil, abusive and unethical that her cunning has turned us all into trained gerbils that ignore the pain and keep trudging down the Habitrail for the every-ther-Friday bliss of direct deposit. Friends are split on whether I should quit without a job or $ beneath me, or if I should get fired for the unemployment. I dunno, but I think it's all coming to a head. Anyway, do you think I should drop the chain today?
Oh, and props to jonmc for his recent workplace woes.

If you get paid for the holiday, you should wait 'til Monday to quit.

wait until after holiday season. makes it easier for you to buy me something nice this year.

Do you have an exit strategy?

Get another job lined up first, then quit.

Revenge is a dish best eaten cold. Start your job search now and document the bitch.

Then drop the hammer on her and either take her out or get laid off in retaliation.

In the meantime, talk to a good, experienced and expensive employment lawyer. It will probably cost $150 for a consult, but if you are in a good position vis a vis the facts, it will be worth it.

The reason to use expensive lawyers is that they know what they are doing, their time is in demand, they have lots of other clients they want to get on with and they won't run up billable hours screwing around on you. Bad lawyers will run up time on you because they don't have enough clients and end up not only costing more, but they won't get the job done.

In the mean time, keep your nose clean, draw your paycheck, and get the goods on her. Be really sweet, perky and look busy. Enjoy your holiday. Get that other job lined up, then blow her out of the water and machine-gun the lifeboats.

Doing good through doing harm.

After reading your bio on your website, I say go ahead and quit. Your gut instincts seem to do well for you, and you have a good head on your shoulders.

but I still want something nice for the holidays.

ENFPs sometimes make serious errors in judgment. They have an amazing ability to intuitively perceive the truth about a person or situation, but when they apply judgment to their perception, they may jump to the wrong conclusions.

Get professional advice. This is an INTJ speaking.

i say wait til January too, and start interviewing now so you have something lined up.

INTJ astrology buff here sez: With three planets in retrograde motion, now isn't the time to do anything rash. The more careful you are right now, the better off you'll be in a couple of months.

You can come join me in unemployment land, which is rapidly getting way less la la than it was a month or two ago. There are no jobs in Asheville. Don't forget this, hon. I forgot that simple fact and now look at me - sure, I'm happier without my psychopathic boss, but the wolf is beginning to bay awfully damn close to the door.

which are retrograde now?

If they don't turn on the heat in this fucking office soon. I'm gonna set a fire just for the fucking warmth.

(moonbird, as liberating as simply walking out can feel, line up something first. unemployment sucks)

Second third fourth or whatever the notion to wait til after the holidays. Which can be depressing enough for some. Besides, you know how most people come back from a holiday break relatively re-energized? If you quit on the first day back, you'll destroy that energy. Heh heh heh.

jon, looks like your ass will be enflamed sooner than I thought! *runs*

i would say only walk out if that's exactly what you're doing -- walking out of that entire chink of your life, completely burning all bridges, and never coming back. so, if you're going to mongolia, you should walk out.

which, yes, you should totally do. IT IS AWESOME to do this. this is when we are at our best, when we are telling everyone else to get stuffed. i'm pretty sure this is the evolutionary advantage my progenitors developed that got us here today, naked, screaming, and covered in blood.

otherwise, try not ever to get fired. unemployment insurance doesn't cover the bad reputation it can give you.

Thanks everyone for your inspirational messages of hope and wisdom ; ). I caught wind that she plans to "take care of me" next week, which I think I'll head off by resigning. I'm really not into a black mark on my resume, even though her own inconsistency caused it. So my job hunt will now go into a very, very high gear so there's a landing pad for me when I depart this particular labrynth and its Xanax-bedazzled minotaur.
