I'm too drunk to drive... BEER CALL! Guy's night: 5 guys, lots of beer, pizza, and the occasional cigarette. One guy says, "we need more beer." Everyone agrees, but no one is sober enough to drive. An idea is proposed: a company that delivers beer, cigarettes, pizza, and wings.[More:]

"What would you give for a 24 pack of Bud Light, another pack of cigarettes, 2 pizzas, and a bucket of wings?"

The answer: more than market value. What's market value to a bunch of drunk guys anyways?

The problem: age-verification. I assume the only reason a business like this doesn't already exist is age-verification. How can you tell if the person on the other end of the phone is of age? If that hurdle can be crossed, a business might be born.

Any suggestions?
I have a suggestion. Stop by my place Sunday night around 9:30. The booze always runs out around then, and Monday is way too close to quit.

So bjork24, have we helped you out here? :)

Ok, it's a bowling night, so I'm off to the lanes for balls and libations. Read that any way you will.

You see little companies that do this pop up all the time.
They never last.
I don't know why, but suspect that the "drunk-guy premium" is less than you'd imagine.

Someone here is way ahead of you, bjork24 - it's called "Ring a Drink" and they deliver from local bottle shops to your door. Age verification is carried out at the door. Can't find any useful links though - sorry.

Yeah there's a pizza / pasta place near my friend's place that delivers beer, food and cigarettes until around 1am, but you pay a pretty big premium.

Something like this would go over so big in Portland that I think I'd end up a millionaire if I started a company...

My semi-regular home poker game found a way to do this. Generous bribes to the pizza delivery guy.

I think the first step is to create an age-verifying telephone...

bjork24: I suggest starting with the Missouri Revised Statutes, then the liquor control commission, and working from there.

Here's an academic project.

A little googling suggests that this is available in the UK, Canada, and some US states that are a lot like Canada. But MO is quasi Bible Belt, so all bets are off.

Yeah, I'd always wondered why this hasn't been done before. When I worked delivering pizzas, sometimes friends of the boss would ring up and tell me to pick up a packet of smokes with their order, and I got to wondering why this isn't mainstream. Like you, I have often been in that situation - too drunk to drive, but out of beer and not yet drunk enough. Would seem to be a public service - keeping drunks off the road - but I figured there would have to be some law against it. Especially in Australia, with our strange laws regarding the sale of alcohol. We have drive through liquor stores (I know I guy who works in one - apparently, loads of tourists drive in to get their photo taken in such a strange establishment) yet you can't buy beer or wine in a supermarket. But then, everywhere has strange liquor laws in one way or another.

mosch: you've reminded me that at one or two blessed times in my life I've had access to local pizza delivery guys who've been happy to discretely deliver, uh, glaucoma medication along with the pizza and smokes, which is such a perfect symbiosis as to be almost unholy.
