AskMecha: DVD playback on my puter. What's your favorite free software for playing DVDs on your XP computer?[More:]Or should I just buy a decoder that works with Windows Media, which tells me "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a problem occurred with digital copyright protection"?
RealAlternative plays DVDs just fine, and lots of other files, including of course RealMedia.

Google for it, install it, open the player, then go to File -> open DVD.

I find VLC will play most stuff that Media Player refuses too.

I really wish everyone would just use a small/limited set of nice and friendly mpeg codecs. I seem to have the least amount of trouble with those, and practically every player in the world plays them.

But what can you do?

I've found that my VLC stutters when playing DVDs, but will play HD Xvids just fun. Not sure what that's about.

I sadly use the pay software, WinDVD, that came with my video card.

Me too, selfnoise - I am too lazy to look for anything else when what I get with the card seems to work perfectly well.
