MetaChat is an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and
chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter. Questions? Check the FAQ. Please note: This is important.

It's saturday night and I ain't got nobody, and despite appearances, I'm not in IRC twice.→[More:]
Thought the new feature would get rid of the come hither posts, did you?
I'm not coming hither, because if I do, I know what happens: suddenly it's three hours later, and I haven't done any of the things I'm supposed to do (though I am wearing a silly grin and giggling a lot).
But I don't mind the come hither posts, personally. I see them as tiny little personal art statements.
I debated about whether to engage in the come-hither post thing, given dodgy's programming prowess -- which makes the come-hither, henceforth, basically irrelevant.
By the way... If somebody wise in the ways of IRC lore could write us up a very basic "IRC How-To" page just for us, that would be excellent. Just a couple of links to the main clients, how to register your nic, how to make your nic show up on our list, how to change your password - the most important essentials for getting someone up and running on #metachat.
In fact, mudpuppie, I'm deputizing you to find the person for this task. I'm authorizing you to conduct a house-to-house search in order to requisition the skills of this individual, and you may take the zombie vampire bunny army with you in the case that he or she requires any persuasion.
heh. Despite your interesting distraction with the carrot, I'm afraid I still remember that I always have to ask someone on the channel how to do anything. Get back on the job, mudpuppie.
Wow... I totally forgot about that. Talk about your internet memory!
What about that "-i" thing? Or is it "+i"? Anyway, some people show up on our sidebar list when their on the chanell, and some don't, it seems... And if you don't you need to type something with an "i"?
Here's some stuff that I think should be in the FAQ, if we do one. It's what seems to be the most basic/useful/frequently asked about commands.
But, keep in mind, in most clients you can do a lot of the operator commands with the mouse by right-clicking on a username.
Type this:
/me looks at pictures of bunnies
To get this yournick looks at pictures of bunnies
To change your name type
/nick newname
To sign off with a specialized message type this:
/quit Goodnight metachat!
And everyone still in channel will see:
*** Signoff: yournick (Goodnight metachat!)".
If you are an operator and want to change the topic it would be:
/topic BUNNIES BUNNIES BUNNIES! (or whatever)
To ignore
/ignore NICK
To show on the now-online list
/mode NICK -i
If you are an op and want to give op priviliges to someone else
/mode NICK +o
That's not everything by a long shot, but it does seem to cover the frequent "How do I...?" questions.
