10 September 2005

Ask MeCha OK, i just woke up (circa 9:30), I'm still drunk from last night, and I have a lot to do today.[More:]I've downed a liter of water, but I can still feel the hangover on the horizon like a fucking pirate ship or something. What do I do to make this day not suck?
Balls Balls Balls.

Water, stretch, B complex vitamins/niacin, and some salts and/or electolyes. Then grab a stiff cup of coffee or tea. If that still doesn't work, take a cold shower.

There's always a bit of the hair of the dog that bit you, but at the level of post-drunk-drunk you seem to be describing I'd be wary. :)

I'm a big fan of gatoraid and/or vitamin water.
In fact, as soon as I can be compelled to get dressed and showered and stuff (not in that order) I will be going out to get some for myself.

muddgirl: You are like the first bud in [insert pertinent geographical region and season], you will blossom then wither. This is the nature of things. There is no escape. Do not attempt to change the natural order. There again, a Berocca might help.

don't drink last night. :-)

Gatoraid = electrolytes, and is a totally acceptable source for them if you don't mind the sugar.

Gatorade, aspirin, some greasy food and, although it will hurt terribly, exercise. You'll feel somewhat better after that although, honestly, the day will still suck. I was there yesterday and it was pretty grisly. Today, however, after a virtuous except for the mountains of greasy food evening, I feel great. So remember that this too shall pass and maybe you can put off all the stuff you need to do until tomorrow. Because the best thing of all is just to go back to bed and write today off.

Eat something spicy to shake the cobwebs. Drink lots of fluids. Take some advil. Once in motion, remain in motion--because once you sit down, you're not getting back up.

haha thanks. Gatorade and Taco Bell are obvious :)

I just remembered that I fractured my big toenail last night. It really really hurts. Damn.

Even the magnificent q is not immune from Former Drunkard Judgemental Syndrome...

We must meet someday at a good buffet, and I'll eat you under the table...

kinda later in the day, but next time:

lots and lots of water, cannabis ingestion is nice, try to excercise a bit then take a short nap. works for me.

I have a friend who is in the nat'l guard. They day after a night of drinking, when he needs to be flying helicopters, he goes to the field med. kits, and hooks himself up to an IV, and gives himself some saline. He says it works wonders.

OK, I'm late and you probably don't have that option. I just think that is such a cool hang over cure.

(Also, for the NEXT time: if at all possible, make yourself drink one glass of water for every alcoholic beverage. I've found that makes a real difference the next day).

I got this from a Heinlein novel and it has served me well:

Drink a quart of fluids and eat a double-dose of Excedrin or some such. Go into the shower. Inch up the heat of the water until it turns your skin red. Stay in as long as you can stand. Then--get ready--turn the water all the way to cold. Scream if you must. The shock will have your heart beating like a trip hammer, pumping oxygen to where it is needed. When you can't stand it anymore, get out and towel off. Your hangover will be gone. A big greasy spicy breakfast will keep it from coming back.

So, um, why is getting wasted fun?

Note: this is from someone who never has been drunk. Not a "better than thou" comment, just letting y'all know I have no frame of reference. I've drunk enough in one sitting to be drunk/hungover but it's never happened. Not that I would have driven or anything. Just sayin'. Okay, now you can answer the question.

LarryC - I'll try that next time.

deborah - I drink because I'm extremely anti-social, and alcohol kills my inner critic that stops me from interacting with people I don't know. The problem is when you have a huge group of people more or less like me who are all drinking to become social, it has a tendency to spiral out of control. Being wasted amplifies our feelings; if you're happy it'll make you feel invincible (even though my poor broken toenail tells me I'm not).
posted by muddgirl 11 September | 18:31
Thanks for that, muddgirl.

I have noticed when I have a drink or two that inner critic shuts the fuck up and I can socialize more easily. However, more than that and I'm afraid of losing my more intelligent inhibitions (driving drunk, sleeping with the hockey team, dancing naked, etc.). That one or two drinks is plenty and I won't be scaring the horses (or anyone else) AND I won't wake up with the population of Brazil doing the cha-cha in my head.

deb - yeah, I try not to get "wicked retarded" as they say in Massachusetts, but that can be difficult sometimes - large parties in a cramped space (like the one this weekend) cause this sort of group consciousness that lowers our inhibitions anyway - and besides, liquor tastes good.
