Write your reps. [More:] The What Can We Do thread seemed to reach the consensus that the best we can do, if we're not in the neighborhood, is harangue our elected officials.

The above link is a one-stop shop for doing that. Just enter your personal info (necessary for determining whose constituency you belong in) and paste your letter.

I shamelessly cribbed from LeeJay's. Feel free to write your own, or copy hers from below:

Regarding the disaster along the Gulf Coast, I beg of you: Get off your
ass and get down there.

People are dying. It has been five days. People are losing hope. Five
days. If you have any decency, any dedication at all to your countrymen,
you will stop dragging your feet and get moving. Every moment you hesitate
means more life lost, more hopes destroyed. People are relying on you to
be a leader. Not just those along the devastated Gulf Coast but also those
of us who wish we had the power to do something about this. Most of us
don't. You do. And if you continue to refuse to use that power to help
those who need it so desperately then you can rest assured that the people
you represent will not forget.

Like the millionaire congresscritters are going to get their dainty shoes dirty with the floodwaters.

They don't care. They don't care about the people, they don't care about the situation, they couldn't give a rat's ass about threats to unseat them. They know that they're elected by lobbyists and contributors and not by the people. Shit, the people in this country haven't had elected representation for as long as I've been old enough to be aware of the political process.

This disaster shows that we can't trust the federal or state governments to do anything but drain our wallets.

It also might be interesting/useful to check out your reps/senators websites to see what committees they're on. One of my local senators, Susan Collins, is chairperson of the Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, and I'm going to write her asking for an investigation into the failure of DHS/FEMA to prepare for or respond appropriately to this emergency.

It looks from CNN online that help is finally getting there. Note the quote from the General who said something ti his troops like, "put your weapons down, you are not in Iraq". Why this makes me cry, I cannot say.

Yeah that got me too. It was this little ray of sanity and compassion and common sense in an otherwise mean and crazy day.
