Puke! [More:]

Anyone have experience using Sea Bands -- those anti-seasickness bracelets that supposedly control the barfs via acupressure?

I'm not convinced that they work. I'm more of a drug person, but I'm quickly building up a Dramamine tolerance.

Testimonials welcomed.
I don't have personal experience, but I have a couple of friends that swear by them. Not very helpful, though, sorry :)

The only thing that works for me (pleasant surprise, actually) is Xanax.

I used them on a whale-watching trip in the San Juan Islands and they did not a thing for me. I didn't barf, but I didn't feel like tap-dancing, either. And I always want to tap-dance when I see these guys.

Great, Melissa. Thanks a lot! The San Juans are where I'm headed.

Puddin'head, I'd be happy to give you my address. ;)

I used them for morning sickness and had the same results as Melissa May.

You saw otters?

By the way, if you drop me in the Pacific I turn into a sea otter - frolicking and rolling in the waves, wearing kelp, the whole shebang. I'd dive for abalone and urchins and eat them raw while happily floating on my back in the rolling swells and swirling kelp forests, but I still look like a human so I'd just get in trouble.

I really wish I liked sushi when I was a kid. There were a few times my brother, my dad and I went out deep sea fishing on some of my dad's friend's boats, and they pulled up huge tuna, shark, and marlin for eating. Imagine a slab of fresh tuna bigger than your head on a hibachi or grill in the galley.

No one I know has ever had any success with the wristbands. There are prescription alternatives to dramamine that are supposed to be pretty effective, so it may be worth asking your doctor about them. Benadryl can also be effective.

The best advice I can give you is to get out and move around, no matter how bad you feel. Remaining seated in the cabin is the quickest way to get sick. Stay outside as much as possible.

Sucking on candied ginger can also help.

If you are passing through WarbabyLand, aka Bellingham, aka Gateway to the San Juans, stop by and say howdy. With minimal advance notice, I'll throw a cocktail campfire.

I indeed saw otters. And a bald eagle, and many seals, and orcas, and even the more rarely spotted minke whale. It was wonderful, and my queasiness was fortunately not too terrible -- but those sea bands are costly and I expected to be a lot more comfortable than I was.

(I turn into an otter in the water too loq -- happy as I can be. I've lived in landlock for far too long. I truly miss the sea -- even the murky milky Atlantic would do.)

I second jrossi4r... ginger always works for me. Either candied, or ale form (make sure it has real ginger in it, most don't). My roommate from Hawaii had these really amazing Chinese dried ginger things, but I'll be damned if I can remember the name of them.

And eeeee, whale watching is fun. I've only gone on trips in the Northeast, though.
