From 1839 to 1901, there was a railway under the sea. In 1883,
Magnus Volk built Volk's Electric Railway, the first public electric railway in Britain. He then went completely off the rails (so to speak), and built the Brighton and Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway, running on 4km of
undersea track. The single car, christened
Pioneer but nicknamed Daddy Long Legs ran on stilts and could carry 160 passengers at a blistering 3.2 km per hour.
Due to maritime regulations, the Pioneer could only operate with a certified sea captain and a full compliment of life jackets and life vests.
Although it was a
popular tourist attraction. The rail line was commercially unsuccessful.
