"The gunshots were firecrackers. The stage blood came from a white plastic bucket of Open Pit barbecue sauce. The costumes did not evoke 1946.

But the amateurish touches did not detract from the power of the re-enactment of a lynching here at Moore's Ford, on the bank of the Apalachee River in which two black women, one seven months pregnant, and two black men, one a World War II veteran, were killed by a mob of white men 59 years ago Monday. No one was ever prosecuted, and the event's organizers say they want justice."

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
