MeFi goons have taken over #metachat! [More:]

We need you to help hold down the fort. Right now it's just loquacious and me. We must outmaneuver and outflank. Capture the flag.

SAVE #metachat!
It always tells me "IRC is not a registered protocol" when I try to click these links. What gives?

What is this "#metachat" of which you speak?

I'm sorry, I love you guys but no IRC for me, my standards are very very low, but do exist.

Just keep trying to make nice and if that doesn't work just lay back and think of England.

Are you sure, mudpuppie? - Oh, okay - *hesitantly clicks link*

Safari can’t open “irc://irc.slashnet.org/metachat” because Mac OS X doesn’t recognize Internet addresses starting with “irc:”.

Rats!

For those wondering what's going on, the "goons" were folks from #mefi: Linnwood, Nerudan, quonsar, and styxno. Their goal was to take over the #metachat channel, and they have succeeded.

They are now kicking out MeCha regulars like loquacious...

posted by Linnwood 14 July | 18:26
To assert my position on the whole #mefi vs. #metachat thing, and I think I can speak for the majority of MetaChat.org members:

#metachat (Or #meta_chat, as it may end up being) isn't for #mefi to control, harrass, or otherwise flavor in the exact or similar manner that #mefi has been flavored.

After talking with a number of core MetaChat users, the general consensus is that #mefi isn't always so nice.

#mefi = not always so friendly, sincere, or sensitive. Or genuine (at least, to outsiders).

#metachat (so far) = empathic, sincere, almost always friendly, sensitive, and more things that #mefi or IRC in general aren't normally known for.

We want nice things, and we can have them. I frankly would like to preserve at least some of the sincerity, genuineness and empathy that's been delightfully present on #metachat so far.

This isn't to say in the least that #mefi and MetaFilter users aren't welcome. Who here isn't a MetaFilter user, or has been one?

But if we - MetaChat - simply wanted more buckets of unadulterated cock and an unimpressive signal to noise ratio and the looming specter of elitism, we would have just joined #mefi in the first place.

Frankly, I could give a sackful of stale assholes whether or not it's 'cool' or 'hip' to wear my emotions on my sleeve and desire a bit of sincerity and empathy in my conversations with people. I could give a fuck if it's not cool to not be hard. I'm not here to be cool - I think that if you read any of my posts should be pretty apparent by now.

As I finish this up, it's clear that #metachat on irc.slashnet.net has been hijacked by Nerudan and Steve_@_Linwood, and the so-called #mefi cabal. They can have it.

Right on, loquacious.

I propose we attempt a strategy that a) never quite caught on at MeFi, and b) will work really well:

Ignore the trolls. Don't play the game. When idiots come around just to poke metachat with a stick, pretend you didn't feel it. Do not respond. Pretend it never happened. Ignore and move on. Keep your mouth shut. If you prefer, keep yer mouth shut. Don't give in. Open your umbrella to protect metachat from the shit storm. Ignore the trolls.

as a IRC noob myself (and one that has always been treated well on #mefi) i hear more and more lore about the crazy old days of IRC, especially about why it's not the best idea to try and have a serious channel on a big IRC server. stuff like this i guess. and it seems like having any sort of thin skin near a channel is just well, begging for trouble.

metachat is supposed to be kinda fluffy and forgiving, right, but the response to this is seems a bit grim. it seems like the goons here are having fun at something others are taking real serious, and vice versa. i see why this is upsetting but i'm saying, uniting and not dividing might require a bit of shrugging it off, and a live and learn attitude.

i personallly think it's kind of funny to see noobs get pwned, and that extends to when i'm the noob. to a point, of course, but taking over a channel on a giant irc network seems like its not actually a great big deal. i know people want their peaceful corner sometimes, but sometimes it doesn't come as easy.

I'm just going to peg it as further proof of Steve's inability to form relationships, his insincerity, his general attitude towards others, his inability to see softness in people as a feature, not a bug and that power is always justified by the reason of power itself. The law of claw, of tooth, of muscle and bone over all, right Steve? Might is the only thing that matters.

I'll be smug in knowing that people like Steve make me feel sane, normal, and not an asshole. There's nothing Steve could ever say that would make me take him seriously ever again, and I know that's true for a lot of people that went through this.

I'll also feel smug in knowing that these are traits that are (more often than not, it seems) shared by people of a conservative/rightwing political alignment, that these people could give a fuck about humanity and being social, and that that's fine. As long as we all know where we stand. It makes me feeled all the more justified in being a partisan bitch.

As far as I know, metachat itself was set up specifically to be a site where people aren't assholes to each other. I've been a jerk in the past here, and I feel bad about it.

I don't at all understand why someone would want to *infect* this site with assholery, *just for the sake of doing it*. It's like saying "we're assholes here, why aren't they assholes there? Let's go over there and make them assholes, too."

In case anyone else hasn't noticed, the front page here is *dead*. Everyone's stunned, and only this thread is active. Some people noticed that the mood around here wasn't all about "such and such is teh gay", and came to spoil the fun. Good job. It worked.

What do we do now?

Because of his MeFi experiences, steve feels excluded. The irony is (and I say this with complete confidence) if steve had come in here and merely goofed around with everybody else, he would've been welcomed with open arms. In fact, this site was created with that in mind. There's a few people here who I've brawled with in the blue, who have been totally convivial with me here.

Steve either dosen't belive that's possible, or he dosen't want any part of it. Both options are depressing.

There also is the possibility this is an impostor. Steve did make a lot of enemies at MeFi. It's not impossible that somebody might want to fuck with him this way.
posted by jonmc 14 July | 20:49
"Is there such a thing as a private IRC channel (or whatever you call it)?"

Just an aside, yes. There are multiple ways to accomplish this. You can "/mode #channel +k password", you can +i for invite only, you can even lockdown a channel with +l to limit the number of users, or +m (mute) and +v the people you approve of.

All of this tends to result in an unsightly, closed system though because you have to do passwords, setup systems for invites, blah blah blah - it's messy and awkward and a pain in the dick.

The cleanest solution is to just leave the channel out in the open, registered, and the channel founder (the person who registered the channel with ChanServ) has infinite authority via ChanServ (basically a global services bot integrated into the network) no matter who has ops, or what they try to do (after registering the channel I opped some guys from metachat and let them screw around kicking people left and right - it was pretty funny when they tried to kick me and found out they couldn't). This is what exists in #meta_chat, and since by default #metachat expires in two weeks what will exist there, then.

The final solution (nothing to do with Nazis, I assure you) is to run your own IRC server. For anyone smart enough to run their own Apache server, this is really on the same level. Anybody with a G-Line or O-Line (GlobalOps or server-specific IRCops) can more or less do what they want, including telling the channel services bots to go fuck themselves in cases like the current ones with #metachat. I don't recommend doing this unless you know what the fuck you're doing, though.
posted by Nerudan 14 July | 20:52

Also, don't fall for the idea that, because it's IRC it's not permanent. Always assume that someone is logging the conversation and that they are likely to post the text of it somewhere that will embarrass you. It is a good idea to assume that anything you write on the Internet (web sites, IRC, e-mail, everything) is both public and permanent.

Getting your big brother to beat up the server for you...not so l33t really. Kudos to Nerudan on his mastery of the arcaneness that is IRC...but I guess I fail to see why he would use it to attack a relatively innocuous (and insanely easy) target like mecha. I mean, it's not many xp points for stabbing marshmallows, ya know?

Firstly I'd ask everyone to chill out. Chill out.

Thank you.

Now this all sounds terribly exciting written here but the reality was rather dull. I went away from the keyboard for a little while and when I came back there were five extra people. They spoke of peak oil and threw a few mild insults around but mostly, well, they just lurked. They sat there and said fuck all, and folk from here mostly said nothing or just left and that was that.

So they took over a chat room that nobody wants to chat in. Cool.

The reality is we can use any variety of #meta-chat #meta_chat #mecha or even #bunni_luvrs but we can always use a different name if we wish. If our friendly local invaders keep invading then I guess less people will bother with it and eventually it won't be worth invading anymore. That'd be a shame but I guess that's the nature of irc. Sure we could lock stuff down, but in the end I think that'll be more of an impediment for folk from metachat than from mefi.

So there you go - not nearly as exciting as you may think.
