Young children have short attention spans and will more easily take in short sentences, rhyming phrases, and immediately apparent plots. Older children who have not spent a lot of time with books may also have short attention spans. When reading beautiful books that stretch a child’s listening ability, prereading can be especially helpful to you. You’ll want to look through so that you are ready to engage them in discussion about each new picture as you turn the page – before launching into the next concept introduced by the text. You might also preread to gather ideas for story-based art and cooking activities in order to prepare a follow-up event.
