Randomiser. A music mag I get does this as a regular feature and I'd be interested to see what results we get from people around here. Get your MP3 player out, set it to random and then tell us the first five tracks that come up and tell us a little bit about them. Resist cheating.

I'll start us off.

1. Marshmallow - Come Sunday
I have a fondness for sweet, wimpy pop music and this would sit quite comfortably next to Crowded House's more girly moments. Actually I can recommend the video for Anytime Soon on this page.

2. Morrissey - Dissapointed (live)
Ermm, first time I've heard this track. This is an extra track from the Viva Hate reissue. I don't usually bother with extra tracks, although to be fair this one doesn't sound too bad. No I've spoken too soon, it's crap. I've studiously avoided most of Moz's solo career - how can you top The Smiths?

3. Ron Sexsmith - Wishing Wells
A song off of Sexsmith's excellent last album, he's a great songwriter with a straight forward style that makes it seem all too easy. He also has a soulful voice (although I don't mean that in a Justin Timberlake sense!). This is quite an upbeat number for him.

4. Boards Of Canada - In The Annexe
I love Boards, although this is just a one minute segue - if that's the right word. For those that don't know, they specialise in a kind of creepy ambient electronica. Someone should employ their services to soundtrack a horror movie, they'd be magnificent.

5. Teenage Fanclub - It's All In My Mind
I haven't given this new album much of a chance yet, but so far I love the sound which is very upfront and intimate with harmonies to the fore. "The Fannies" have three songwriters and most fans have a favorite songwriter and this one is by Norman, my favorite.

Well, a strangely coherent selection from my player, a little dull perhaps. See if you fair any better.

1. Van Morrison - Bright side of the road
Like almost all of my music, something that I remember from my youth. Memories of happier times and all that.

2. Pink Floyd - Paintbox
Actually, the biggest surprise here is that only one Floyd track came up, seeing that 158 of the 2343 tracks I have are from them.

3. John Butler Trio - Don't understand
I had not heard this one before - still "discovering" JBT and this is from an album (John Butler Trio Live) that I "borrowed" from a friend. Not sure that I like it much, to be honest. Maybe I just don't understand it.

4. Eric Clapton - Running on faith
I like a good Clapton tune and this is one of my favourites. I am not a great one for analysing why I like particular tracks, but I know what I like when I hear it. That's why I have music from so many artists, I guess.

I like the violent femmes and was surprised to find that the version of Blister in the sun played on the radio here is not the album version, but the original demo.

Heh. My taste is rather eclectic so "random" usually produces a pretty unlistenable mix. Today was no exception...

1) Bob Dylan - The Gaslight Tape
The whole album - it's recorded as one MP3, anyone know an easy way to split it up? Bootleg of a concert given in a Greenwich coffeeshop in 1962. Fantastic stuff - raw versions of some of my favourite tunes. Excellent version of Cocaine Blues. Could listen to this all day.

2) Andrea Bocelli - Nessun Dorma
Hmmm. Moving swiftly on...

3) Verucca Salt - Seether
Loved this years ago. Rediscovered it recently after someone on AskMe pointed out that her cover of Straight Outta Compton was available for download from her site. So was this song.

4) Air - Run
Not the best song on Talkie Walkie which, in turn, isn't the best album they've done. Still, good for chilling out to.

5) Aphrodite - Fanfare (Bomber mix)
From the Aftershock album. Uptempo Drum & Bass.

Built To Spill - Big Dipper
Just about the best post-teen anthem of all time. Doug Martsch is God. There's Nothing Wrong With Love is a rock and roll masterpiece.

Amy Blaschke - Aqua Della Madonna
Amy is a friend. My friend Jake and I recorded this record at a Masons Hall with five microphones. We piped her vocals and guitar through a PA to get live reverb off the room, which was captured with a stereo pair of AKG414's set to figure 8 pattern (Blumlein pair).

The Red Hot Chili Peppers - If You Have To Ask
Great hook, very Parliament. Too bad about the rap verses. Anthony Kiedis is no MC. Blood Sugar Sex Magic is better than the Red Hot Chili Peppers, if you know what I mean.

Shellac - Prayer To God
"Kill him, fucking kill him," sings a laconic Steve Albini over sludgy guitar stabs and thunder drums. Sometimes I really, really love Shellac.

Pixies - Bone Machine (from Surfer Rosa)
Well, come on, if you don't know, then you don't know. Whoa ho whoa ho. Four people that changed the world, etc.

1. Sigur Ros - Intro
One of those songs you have to be in the right mood to listen to, as is the case with most of Sigur Ros' music, but it's good listening.
2. Nine Inch Nails - The Mark Has Been Made
Somewhat of a remnant of things I used to listen to, none of my Nine Inch Nails stuff gets very many plays anymore, but I keep it around.
3. Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall (Part 3)
Well, what's to say?
4. The Ramones - Here Today Gone Tomorrow
Kind of an interesting, slow diversion on Rocket to Russia, I've never really known what to make of this track. I actually usually skip it, but it's not half bad.
5. The Vibrators - She's Bringing You Down
Not as good as Stiff Little Fingers from the same album, but Pure Mania has always held up pretty well.

1. The Hour of Two Lights by Terry Hall & Mushtaq
I had never heard of these guys. This is an absolutely amazing song...very sexy and lush. Bluestone from mf emailed me the mp3 one day out of the blue, after a thread I posted to at the metafilter audioscrobbler forum (please join) in which someone said let's trade mp3s. I think you could classify this as Middle Eastern rock. Very sexy.

2. Your Cover's Blown by Belle & Sebastian
Yes, they're twee. This song is incredibly catchy. Irresistible. Also very sexy.

3. Loops of Fury by The Chemical Brothers
Probably the only electronica I listen to. Hmmm I think I'm sensing a trend here, but this song too, is very sexy. All three are sexy in totally different ways.

4. Star Star by The Frames
I L O V E Irish and Scottish rock and folk. Just naturally drawn to it. I don't know if being Irish and Scottish myself has anything to do with it. Go to Irish Music Central and download some mp3s on the right hand side. U2 doesn't do anything for me, though. The Frames are currently one of my favorite bands.

5. The Masta Blusta by Illmariachi
I just downloaded this last night, from one of the mp3 blogs. It's Mexican rap, and they're really pretty good. I get almost all my mp3s from blogs now, and Hype Machine is the one I check first.

Early stuff from the mid sixties. Very good album.

2) "Funny Face," The Kinks, Something Else by the Kinks
A gift from my girlfriend. I'm her pet project--birthdays I get albums she thinks I should know. It's a good deal. I love the drums on this track.

3) "Do Re Mi," Coffee Creek, Bootleg
An Uncle Tupelo side project with Brian Henneman of Bottle Rockets. Played mostly country covers. (Their cover of Dave Dudley's "Truck Driving Man" is excellent.)

4) "Don't Look Now," Minutemen, Double Nickels on the Dime
Also part of my girfriend's music education program.

5) "Night Time," The Strangeloves, I Want Candy: The Best of the Strangeloves
Again, music education program.

1. "Cecilia" - Simon and Garfunkal
I like a lot of music that I was too young to experience for myself.

2. "Two Points for Honesty" - Guster
I've actually bought all of the Guster CDs [as opposed to illicit downloading or copying from friends], because, damn, are they worth spending money on.

3. "Penny For A Thought" - Saul WIllians
Slam poetry as put to a beat. I've seen this guy perform three times, and he's nothing short of amazing.

4. "King of New Orleans" - Better Than Ezra
I openly embrace all 90s alt-rock that most of the other kids my age try to deny they know anything about (oh, but they still know all of the words)

5."Eastern Standard Time" - The Skatalites
Because ska is great. The end.

1) Blowing in the Wind--Peter Paul & Mary -- one of the many many songs that my brothers and i had as 45s or albums (and later cassettes and 12") that i've searched for as mp3s and put on. I love their voices together--always have.

2) Storytelling--Belle & Sebastian -- love it...haven't heard this song for ages. (iconomy!) : >

3) She Works Hard for the Money--Donna Summer -- see #1, love her, but this isn't one of her best. I'd give it an 86--it's got a great beat and it's fun to dance to. /American Bandstand

4) Izinziswa--Busi Mhlongo from this album: Only the Poorman Feel It -- poppy, African (Mbaqanga), her voice is a little like Joan Armatrading's -- fabulous -- love love this.

5) I'm Like a Bird--Nelly Furtado -- i have like 4 different versions of this song on there, incl. a mix with Asha Bodlee that i listen to a lot. mmmmm.

(As you can tell, i'm a pop person, or things that sound like it)

Industrial band from my home town. Best played really loud to annoy the neighbours and drown out the drivel playing on the radio in these parts :)

Digital Cutup Lounge vs Madonna - WTF
Not sure if anyone heard of this but when Madonna released American Life a dud was made with her saying "what the fuck do you think your doing?" and was released onto p2p networks. A bunch of artists made mashups of it - some being quite good.

1) You Never Get What You Want, Patty Griffin
I love Patty Griffin's debut album, Living with Ghosts. It's positively filled to the brim with bitterness. What's not to like? This song is the perfect encapsulation of a certain ancient-history shitty relationship I'm still shell-shocked from. "You never get what you want, and I don't think it's my fault."

So there.

2) As Good As You've Been to This World, Janis Joplin
Janis Joplin is one-third of my holy trinity. She grew up as the weird, unpopular kid in a small Texas hellhole. Broke free, gave the world the finger. Had a really fucked up life, but was totally cool.

I can match all those experiences point by point -- except for the part about being cool.

3) Roadrunner, Joan Jett
I am not ashamed to admit it. I have a total, raging Thing for Joan Jett. This is a Jonathan Richman song about driving through the 'burbs with the music blasting.

I think.

Who cares? She rocks.

4) Heart of Gold, The Kinks
Sigh. I love the Kinks. Hey -- my theme song! (Underneath that cold exterior/I know you've got a heart of gold/So aloof, so superior/But you've got a heart of gold)

5) Secret Love, Joan Jett
The randomizer is being good to me this morning. (See #3.)

6) Close Up The Honkey Tonks, Flying Burrito Brothers
Since I got a repeat, I get to do an extra. Gram Parsons is the dogfather of country music. He was a disciple and an evangelist for the genre. Without GP, would there be a Wilco?

Wait, did I just type 'dogfather'? Well, that's appropriate I guess. Hank's the godfather; Gram's the dogfather. They're both important roles.

I think this is the one where the father bugs his sons room the son finds out and feeds his father false info about how hard he is studying, drugs he is not doing etc. Classic.

Creeping Death - Metallica
All Metallica songs sound the same from this period (1984). You would recgonize it even if you never heard it before. The lead singer has a distinctive voice and the guitar riffs are always similar.

V. Bourree I-II (Cello Suite) - Bach
Very nice string music - don't know how else to describe it.

Girl - Tori Amos
I don't know this one. I like a lot of her other songs (cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit, China, Tear in Your Hand, and the one with piano and, oh nevermind)

1. Little Sister - Jewel ...gosh, that hasn't popped up in quite some time, I almost forgot I had it. I'm terrible at guitar, but I like to try to learn Jewel's stuff because it's simple enough for me.

2. Walk Like an Egyptian - The Bangles ...it's been a long time since iTunes has chosen that one, too.

3. Mandy Goes to Med School - Dresden Dolls ...just found out about them recently, and this is a bootleg from one of their Boston shows. The audience participation makes me happy.

4. GO NOW! - SMAP ...oh, Japanese boy-band pop. Left over from my year-long stay in Japan.

5. My Sacrifice - Creed ...this one time, I thought I was in love with a youth minister. I'm not religious, but my playlist tried to be.

"Repetition," David Bowie -- from Lodger, the first Bowie record I ever owned (on 8-track, no less!). Dispassionate, kind of droney tale of a guy who hits his wife.

"Temptation," New Order -- this song reminds me so much of college it makes me want to fall down weeping, but I am too busy dancing!

"Celebration Guns," Stars -- Ah, so pretty. She's got such a clear, sweet voice, and the string arrangement is just the perfect mix of elegant and lush.

"Ghetto Defendant," The Clash -- the edited version from Clash on Broadway. Atmospheric harmonica + Allen Ginsburg spoken word = very cool.

"I Need You," Curtis Mayfield & the Impressions -- god, Mayfield had just such incredible voice. Great mid-tempo mid-60s soul.

Infected Mushroom - Acid Killer -- One of the not best songs by one of the absolute best psychedelic trance musicians.

Schubert - Allegro Moderato (Symphony #8) -- In a word, pleasant. Schubert reminds me of car trips with my parents when I was a kid, generally to Italian restaurants for lunch on Sunday.

Kodo - Yatai Bayashi -- Taiko drums are good. Kodo is the most famous taiko drumming groups. However, they leave me quite underwhelmed.

Planet Freeland - Chase the Sun -- Decent ambient house-like tune, from a compilation I got in a New Year's Grab Bag sale. Not bad, not amazing.

Delia Delbyshire - The Doctor Who Theme -- You know, the Doctor Who theme.

For what it's worth:

Glory of Love - Chicago Good God. Even the genre field says 'soft rock'. That's rock.

Life on Mars? - David Bowie From the Hunky Dory album. I really dig David Bowie. Saw him last year, it was a good concert. Also stood outside the stadium during the Glass Spider tour when I was about 12.

You Spin Me Round 2003 (Metro Mix) - Dead or Alive Eek. I don't know where this stuff comes from. Really. Actually, when I first discovered file sharing I used to download only the stuff I had never seen, remixes and so forth. Would be from that..

Six Months in a Leaky Boat - Split Enz Memories. I can remember this song when it came out. They were kinda freaky with their Eraserhead hairdos and wacky suits. I saw an exhibition of their clothes at The Performing Arts museum in Melbourne.

I'm So Tired - The Beatles Demo from the Arrive without Aging bootleg. The quality is pretty bad, the tape speeds up a lot. The White Album is still my favourite Beatles album. I have torrid affairs with Revolver, Rubber Soul, Abbey Road and even Let It Be but I always go back to the White album.

This has been fun, shame I got here late...

Calexico, Alone Again Or, from the Convict Pool EP. Most excellent cover of a classic song from the 60s band Love. Calexico's indie-mariachi bent is perfect for the middle section.

Beth Orton, Carmella. This is the album version from Daybreaker, but I also have a very nice remix from Four Tet.

Rufus Wainwright, Oh What a World, from Want One. "Straight men reading fashion magazines, oh what a world it seems we live in."

LCD Soundsystem, Yeah [Pretentious Version], from S/T. I saw these guys live a couple weeks ago, with M.I.A. opening. Lotsa fun.

Mum, Faraway Swimmingpool, from Finally We are No One. This record is great to fall asleep to. Strange, otherwordly, beautiful. Fans of Board of Canada would probably like this one.

The Clash - 'Rock the Casbah' An old favorite, what's not to like?!

Kate Bush - 'Running Up That Hill' Her voice is so different, her lyrics....I don't know, just something about her music that I am fond of.

Ministry - 'So What' (live version) I am a huge Ministry fan. Satisfies my need to get violent....without, ya know, actually getting violent.

Talk Talk - 'It's My Life' Takes me back to my high school days. Surprisingly, one of the better concerts I saw back then.

Pat Metheny - 'It's For You' I love Pat Metheny and this is my favorite of his. It was also on the Soundtrack for "Fandango", which I really liked.

Late to the party much? Still, so much fun I have to add my own...

1. Johnny Clarke - Moving Out of Babylon: If you were to only purchase one collection of Jamaican music, you would have to purchase the Story of Jamaican music 4 cd set. From the earliest ska to mid-90's dancehall, the set covers it all and the liner notes are worth the price of admission alone. Clarke is an underated reggae artist and this track is arguably his finest of the early 70's.

2. Lambchop - Betweemus: Not the best Lambchop track ever released, but then Lambchop is very hit or miss (as far as I'm concerned anyway) and certainly not the track I'd pick off Jack's Tulips to feature. Then again, this is all random. Instead, give Soaky in the Pooper a try.

3. Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On: If you need me to discuss this track, well, you're probably not reading this thread in the first place. Amusing anecdote: I had put this in a 'music to make out by' compilation tape when I was a bit younger and naive. Let's just say it was, erm, ineffective because of the overtly obvious angle.

4. Johnny Cash - I See A Darkness: The whole "obvious songs for a dying man to cover" schtick that kept Cash in cash for his last few years should have totally sucked. But this is the Man in Black and he hits them all out of the park. All of American III kicks my ass even now.

5. Aphex Twin - Quoth: The twin has always been my music to program by and thus my work playlist is chock-a-block with AT.

a fun idea; i applaud everyone's eclecticism.

Do Make Say Think - Minmin a post-rock instrumental thingy with heavy jazz influences...cool stuff, but not one of their better tracks.

Johann Johannsson - Bao not the actual title, which contains some Icelandic characters I couldn't be bothered with...neo-classical-cum-electronica-what-have-you...this is a nice piano piece with an '80's horror movie kind of feel; i can picture a panting, sweaty Jamie Lee Curtis being stalked down a dark hallway...sounds like it may have been recorded on a Romper Room piano

R.E.M. - First We Take Manhattan a cover of a Leonard Cohen tune...I've always been pretty lukewarm on R.E.M., but i like this.

Mountain Goats - Bad Priestess Don't get me started on the Mountain Goats...No, really, don't.

Lee Ranaldo - Fragile Sonic Youth dude plays Wire. Is there really any point in mentioning that the Wire version was better?
