Cool. I would be thrilled to get a tour of there. By dint of my work I've gotten a chance to poke around some very interesting naval settings, including the Portsmouth NAval Shipyard which actually looks a lot like this one. The drydocks are cool but, like you, I have a fascination for the old architecture and infrastructure. The worker housing and shop are my favorite. Motion Picture Office! You just have to love all the specific types of activities on a base.

Is this open to the public? Can you access only on special tour? Portsmouth and Bath shipyards are hard to get into since 9/11. This would be a fun place to visit.

Thanks!

The only section of the yard that is open to the public -- that I know of -- is the new museum BLDG 92, which is featured in some of the photos. You need to be on a tour to get access to the rest of the facility. And I noticed that the tours are fairly regimented. They're using a bus to transport you around an easily walkable site. I got the sense that they really didn't want you traipsing around on your own. The tour guide pointed out a Hollywood sound stage located on the east side of the yard; I can imagine that being a magnet for stalkers and the paparazzi element.
