I almost never listen to classical music as background music while working, but I find there's something about the Goldberg Variations (youtube) that really works for me. Combined with quickchess.net, it's like a mental palate-cleanser.
I enjoy listening to the differences in Glenn Gould's versions:
1955
and
1981

Oh interesting, thanks mightshould!

Funny thing I've learned from the Youtube comments: this is the music playing in the background during a memorable scene in The Silence of the Lambs.

Oh and another recording in the same vein I've been listening to:

The Hours OST by Philip Glass. youtube
