I agree with amro. I have had conversations about books that I haven't read, but I don't think I've ever lied about having read them. I figure that being able to converse about books one has not read is the one advantage to majoring in English.

There's always the useful book How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read. A real masterpiece, I especially liked the words and the order they were in.

There's a long riff on this in the movie Metropolitan:

Tom ridicules Audrey for liking Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. He points out that, even though he's never read it, it is universally agreed to be a mediocre book. "You don't have to read a book to have an opinion," he argues. He goes on to say that he doesn't read any novels but prefers to read literary criticism instead. "That way you get both the novelists' ideas as well as the critics' thinking," he reasons.
