What's your song of the summer? I'm a lemming, so mine is "Blurred Lines".
I really dig Blurred Lines, but my tune of the summer is Hot Chocolate's Every 1's a Winner. I hadn't heard that song in decades, but it was on the Frances Ha soundtrack, and I recalled how much I love it. Now it's on heavy rotation.
I've been listening to Robert Palmer's Every Kinda People at least once a day, all summer long. Just listen to that bass! That's Pierre Brock playing in the live clip, but the bassline was written and performed in the studio by Motown's legendary Funk Brother Bob Babbitt.
Even though I grew up a literal stone's throw from the beach (I could throw a rock from my yard and hit the beach. . .but a baseball, no), my summer song has to do with the Torrance Plunge, a municipal pool 5 or so miles inland. We always wanted to go to swimming pools even though the Pacific Ocean (warm water in the Summer) was right there.
So, one day, when I was very young, neighbors let me and my sibs tag along and my memory is looking out at the diving board, in profile, and the Kaylin Twins "When" playing on the loudspeaker. It was a cloudy day, which is very common at the beach there in early Summer.
A random moment, but for some reason, still an evocative memory.
I have no idea what Blurred Lines is, other than that it supposedly has a really misogynistic video? (which prompted a genderswap parody version).
At this point, I don't know if I should even bother checking it out or just wait for it to disintegrate into the ephemeral popstream when it's forgotten next month. (Still haven't heard that "Friday" song; no kids on my lawn at this point.)
I have been super nostalgic lately for some reason, and so my perfect "summer song" right now is the old classic Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants To Rule The World". It's just so "high school summer" to me.
I came back from my summer camp with a fresh infusion of interest in Top 40 music. I like Blurred Lines too. I also am one of the legion who can't resist Get Lucky. And this song Royals by Lorde.
I've been playing the Killer Mike/El-P collab "Run the Jewels" in my car most of the summer. My favorite track is probably DDFH (strong lyrics warning).
They're giving away the album for free here, so if you like hip-hop, give it a shot. It's solid.
