Elegy to a piano scarf My knitting blog is generally not a personal blog — I don't want it to be like most knitting blogs, which usually involve the blogger using her knitting projects as a lead-in to going on (and on, and on, and on) about herself, but every once in awhile I might just write something close to home. See what you think of today's post.
My son has a scarf like that.

I had never thought of a piano scarf as tacky before (because the possibility hadn't been suggested) but now I wonder if it's so, and why it would be the case. I wonder if they have an inventor who would, in some different universe, be sewing for infringement when others made one. I wonder if the very first such scarf was tacky, or just those made afterwards. What if it was worn by someone who was tone deaf? Or someone who played the organ and insisted it was an organ scarf?

Great story Orange Swan. And organ scarf touched my inner Beavis and Butt-head. heh heh heh.

Yeah, nice post. If it were me I would probably be unable to separate knitting from the dopes who didn't deserve their gifts, and would have given it up entirely.

No lie, the "sweater curse" is one reason why I'm afraid to take up knitting.

On a different note (heh, heh), I just realized that the structure of your post resembles a essay format I was taught in secondary and high school. And I don't want to get too English-major deconstructionist on you, but I really like the elegant simplicity of the setup of the introduction of the scarf, the personal anecdote, the life lesson that was taught, the reinforcement of the lesson, a reversal and resolution of the initial anecdote, and finally a little summarization of the entire post and how, in a macro way, it relates to the world.

(Note: Going "macro" was the part of essays I sucked at the most. Oh, Lord, I wish I had some of my old papers I could show you and we can all laugh at.)

Oy vey.

I knit a Space Invaders hat for my then-husband. He lost it two days later.

I love this post. Maybe especially because I've just taken up knitting again. Due to my poor taste, I also love the depicted piano scarf.

My husband is promised a cabled scarf in a soft beautiful grey/white/brown/black yarn I found. Hopefully it will not shake the stability of our relationship to actually make this for him.

Also wonder if I can get your pattern for cashmere socks. Sounds like an awesome future project.

They were a pretty basic pattern I got out of a library book, with a bit of cable detailing up the side. You don't really need a special cashmere sock pattern. Just pick out a pattern you like and make sure you buy the right weight of yarn to use for the project.
