Because the Stanley Cup is one of the few big, gaudy things that have not yet been used as decor either in Hearst Castle or the Madonna Inn.

Apparently every player on a winning team gets a day or so with the cup. Given that in my softball league, there is a trophy which similarly gets passed around, and given the stuff that even I insisted on doing in the presence of said trophy, heaven only knows what that cup as seen!

Lord Stanley's Cup gets around. I think about half my friends have Facebook pictures of them posing with the cup from the year it spent here in Pittsburgh a few years ago.

This is why I ADORE hockey. They brought it here to campus one day when the Blackhawks won it; my colleague put his four-day-old son in the cup part, and three hours later another friend drank beer out of it at the student union.

Additionally, there's no restriction to what they can do with it, so long as they don't damage the cup. If a player wants to fill it with ice cream and syrup and invite a kindergarten class to eat their way to the bottom, that's totally allowed.
