In the southwestern corner of Colorado, where the Uncompahgre Plateau descends through spruce forest and scrubland toward the Utah border, there is a region of more than four thousand square miles which has no hospitals, no department stores, and only one pharmacy. The pharmacist is Don Colcord, who lives in the town of Nucla.
Damn, what an amazing story. I feel like I just read an excellent novel, condensed into just a few pages. Thank you, gaspode.

Holy cats, I just spent three weeks motorcycling in that area and west into Utah. It was obvious that the area was remote but somehow I never really thought about living in such an isolated area. Thanks for linking this article.

Wow, I get irritated when I have to drive 7 minutes to the supermarket. And it's not even the closest supermarket, it's just better than the one down the street.

Crikey, that was good. The story winded, but didn't ramble. Broad, but not ungainly. Fantastic, thanks for sharing!

I nicked this and posted it on the blue, with more town history from a resident, and some links to the local news paper, including what appears to be their Facebook page, which is suitably small town, with information on and old couple being named Norwood Pioneer Days Royalty and such.

Oh, I love this! I'm always looking for out of the way, neighborhood mom and pop pharmacies! You just never know what you'll find.
