I need opinions from you nice bunnies. [More:]

Say you see this author entry in a reference list at the end of a book:

Dagger, Richie

1979. "Crime." In Government Issue, edited by Jan Paul Beahm, 58–80. Los Angeles, CA: Slash Publications.

1983. Salmon Ranches of the Northwest. Seattle: Limpet Books.

1987, ed. The Iguana Is Near. Portland, OR: University of Granola Press.

1989. "Lorem Ipsum Dolar Sit Amet." Journal of American Fnord 23 (5): 41–53.

How would you interpret the meaning of the "ed." after the date in the 1987 entry? This is nonstandard – it doesn't conform to the Chicago Manual of Style or other style guides.

Would it indicate that Mr. Dagger is the editor of that particular book or that it is a 1987 edition of that book?

Again, looking for opinions. There are no right or wrong answers. Thanks.
I would conclude he was the editor.

Editor--especially with the comma between the year and the abbreviation.
